Haha I still recommend it as a bit of light reading, but it just worries me that the target audience is obviously younger women, and romanticising abuse can't lead to anything good!

My 13yr old daughter somehow got her hands on a copy. Upon further investigation, turns out it was a friend's that had knicked it from her mum and now was doing the rounds amongst their little circle of friends at school.
Though we try to be as open and honest with our kids about any and all things, even if their embarrassing for us too, this was a bit of a shock for me. I know at 13 I too would have read something like that if I could have gotten my hands on it, but still, with the internet on every kids phone and books such as this putting a glamorous spin on things they're just not mentality ready for yet, I do worry sometimes about unrealistic expectations of future generations who've been so inundated with graphic imagery and media, when reality doesn't meet up to the fantasy.

Sorry to go all dad mode on you there, but well, there it is...

I was about 11-12 when my mate showed me his dad's hardcore nudie magazines. That was the first time I saw women taking dicks in their mouth. Ewww! Now I pay them to do that.

I agree you can be too young for sexually explicit material (pictorial or literary).

Ipswich Secrets

Oh my gosh, don't get me started on 50 shades... haha.

This book has come under a lot of critique from day one, for good reason. Not only because of the subject, which to the majority of the target audience, is a bit 'naughty' and forbidden; but because of the repercussions that is had for the bdsm scene. What people fail to remember is that is was written as twilight fan-fiction, and as a trashy romance novel it's actually not too bad as far as the genre goes.

However, when people look at the relationship between the protagonist and the infamous Mr. Grey, and label the abuse that takes place constantly throughout the series as 'bdsm' or D/s, it becomes worrying.

The community who practise bdsm as a lifestyle have worked hard to maintain a 'code of conduct' as it were, a mantra summed up as SSC (safe, sane, consensual). This is what helps to differentiate 'play' from 'abuse', which the author has failed to recognise in her basic google search of kink. The type of activities depicted in the series, (while hot as hell) are in fact quite dangerous if the person involved is inexperienced, both physically and psychologically. The protagonist is throughout the series, consistently pressured into doing things she isn't comfortable with, emotionally manipulated and is provided with no aftercare or support after several traumatising scenes.

For someone who has no previous knowledge to read this and go, 'hey, beating and degrading my partner sounds like fun!' is just asking for trouble. The amount of injuries I have seen (and personally attained) at the hand of people unwilling to research and learn things is remarkable, nerve damage from poorly tied restraints, internal bleeding from misplaced striking, to going into shock from unrecognised subdrop.

Moral of the story: Not everything you read is accurate. Do your research, communicate with your partner and while you should always be endeavouring to grow and experience new things, be cautious.

(apologies for the essay, bit of a sore point haha)

x
You said it perfectly.
It negates to mention that BDSM is meant to be all about the submissive, and helping them reach their fantasy and push the boundaries they want. It's not an outlet for someone's power or control desires. And it involves lots of communication.
And yes, it was originally a twilight fanfic, although I'm not super into twilight, I can see how Edward Cullan with his mind reading could see where those boundaries are and know that although she is saying no, she really wants something to happen. But swich all the names around and it become a story about abuse.
If you read it and keep in mind the whole thing is a fantasy of someone wishing they were that innocent and wanting someone force them to admit they like the things the author likes.
But if someone just did every BDSM thing they could think of to me without consulting me before or afterwards, I would call that rape and abuse.

I get the excitement some people have for this book But I only wish to ask one question
Is it a well written book or has the hype won everyone over ?

Dan Brown falls into that category of writer to me Massive selling books written to a formula that seems to work Bur are not well written

I have not read it but have heard it being criticised for being poorly written. But the critics still finished reading it anyway.

If I was the author I wouldn't really care if my book was that well written. I'd just be looking at how best to increase my investment portfolio by a massive amount of $$$$$

I saw on the news last night there was a whole stack of them (looked like new copies) at the Lifeline book fair here and an old biddy was lamenting they had not sold any yet. My lecherous mind did momentarily wonder if this octagenarian had read it and what she made of all the fuss.

May be its the modern malaise Why spend days reading and having to use your imagination When you can go to the cinema and have it it all laid out for you, as it were, and its all over and done in 90 minutes

And yes funflyer the authors would be rather happy with the $$$
But I bet after their financially set They will be hoping to write the perfect novel Win the the Nobel prize for Literature

Hope they would be after the perfect novel! But not sure I'd bet that they would try that hard.....on the other hand, they'd be able to afford to hire an up and coming whiz kid to ghost write it for them!

the 50 shades......here we go again......a never ending story.......I did read the first book (half of it just flicking through) even as only light entertainment.........it is awfully bad written.
I never understood why it got all the attention. It is certainly not the first book about this topic.
However.........watching the movie? I don't think so.

Just the shorts bored me..
rich guy shags hot chick......
could have been qusimodo and got the same outcome with that sort of cash.
Everyone knows chicks flock to money like flys to shit
books and film did nothing more than reinforce the stereotype of women seeking money above all else even if it means being blindfolded. Tied up and beaten
