The S bend corset forced the hips back and bust forward. The ideal female figure was a mature woman with a pigeon shaped monobosom.

A lot of people assume that these were for the "working ladies" of the day.... but as romantic a notion as that may be.... these were just quite practical for all. :) Times HAVE changed.
