Information for those that don't know:

All mobile phones have an individual ID number (sort of like a number plate on a car) which is unique to that phone, called an "IMEI" number.

If you still have the original box, it'll be on a sticker there (but not many people keep the box, or the manual or other paperwork).

But if you grab your phone and push *#06# then your phone will display its IMEI number. Keep a record of this number. If your phone is stolen, you can report it to the telephone company (along with your telephone number for the SIM) and the phone company can brick the phone rendering it useless.

The hard part is reacting fast enough that the person who stole it can't sell it, but slow enough that if you've just misplaced it you don't kill your own phone ("oh, it fell behind the couch!").

If the IMEI is reported as stolen then I don't believe that it can be undone. It's also not 100% foolproof, but at least it makes it harder for crooks.

Like me...does anyone else ever wonder what other members are actually like in the flesh? iPhone has a find my phone feature, you can track it either through your MobileMe account or iTunes account. If the phones is still on it will get a gps lock and lead you straight to it.
