The real problem is the anti-gun nuts have hijacked the true problem - successive governments have neglected the mental health system, then when some mentally deranged person like Martin Bryant goes crazy, they blame guns rather than the steady watering down of the system meant to keep him from harming people.

This is because it is much cheaper to buy back guns and have draconian gun laws than to put real money into the mental health system.

In Tas., Martin was diagnosed as needing constant medication and supervision. After a few years, they decided it would be cheaper to place him in a shared house with a mental health nurse visiting every two days.
Then the nurse came once a week, then once every two weeks, then when needed !

When he shot up Port Arthur, he had been off his medication for months.

Who/what is to blame here ? Martin ? The guns he used ? The mental health system ? The government that controls the budget of the mental health system ?

Guns are tools to be used by people - don't blame guns, blame people.

Cheers.

Not entirely correct Bushey you can use reasonable force to defend yourself , the question is what was reasonable at the time ??
You can use equal force not reasonable force. Baseball bat v Cricket bat, knife v knife etc. but when it comes to firearms you will be going to gaol even if the arsehole has a shottie.
Well come to my house and meet my mate SIG :eek::eek::eek:

That is not correct Harry and there are examples to prove it .

There is no death..........it's like the conservation of energy law kids learn school.

If you want to get really profound about this there is a possibility that "life" is a force which is infinite, indestructible and all-present - something like the Christian concept of a "God".

I studied Taoism for a while and the best parallel I could come up with was to compare an individual to a droplet of water in an ocean - the ocean being the "Tao" - an inexhaustible reservoir of energy. The individual can be regarded as a droplet spun off the top of a wave which, briefly, exists as a separate entity before being absorbed back into the whole.

What happens to our human consciousness on death is open to conjecture. Maybe the knowledge we obtained during our lives becomes part of the whole too while we , in turn, reconnect with the body of knowledge that is the Tao.

One thing I am fairly confident of is that he concept of an afterlife "lived" by the body and mind I now occupy is completely nonsensical. "I" certainly won't be sitting on a cloud twanging a harp or shagging my way through 50 odd virgins because all of these scenarios require a body to experience them and the one I used will be destroyed one way or another on death. Therefore any such post-death experience will be like nothing I have experienced here on earth.

One final thing I am absolutely certain of. Sooner or later, hopefully much later, all of us will find out the truth.

Farmboy is right
Who remembers the home invasion in Herne hill way back in 09 77 year old shot a violent intruder in the stomach while defending himself and alsi his ill wife

He was not charged

I think the main difference between here and some countries is that It will be strongly investigated when a firearm is use Not just say Well his was defending his home so thats OK

The legal position on use of force is both simple in concept and incredibly complex in execution and if you are involved in a violent situation it is best to hope the Magistrate you end up facing is in a good mood.

Basically, if attacked you have the right to defend yourself using "reasonable" force in the circumstances.

If a scrawny 75 kilo 60 odd year old like me found himself squaring up to a 100kgs of steroid-stuffing junkie picking up a knife, club or even a gun may well be considered reasonable. However, if I was the big guy and caught a skinny teenager breaking into my house or car beating the crap out of him with or without a weapon would most likely see me on the wrong side of the law.

It seems simple enough but in such a situation you have at best a couple of seconds to assess and react while the Police can take their time dissecting the evidence and deciding at leisure whether or not you got it right.

Best to avoid such situations if it is at all possible.

Well Jqueline if these Pros and Cons can demonstrate that there law abiding adults with a genuine need of a firearm, have secure storage for there firearm that complies with Schedule 4 of the Firearm Regulations 1974. . couplet the HTML Firearm Licence application forms and have a Serviceability Certificate for there gun.???

They can apply for a license

How do I apply?

HTML Application forms are available online.
Once you complete the form, you must print the Application Summary and lodge this with your supporting documents at a participating Australia Post outlet.
You will need to satisfy a 100 point proof of identification requirement.
What constitutes 100 points of ID? See Before you begin (PDF, 125kb).
An application fee is payable, please see Licence fees.

Your Application Summary once lodged will be electronically matched to your application and sent to Licensing Services (Firearms)

How long will it take?

Whilst we endeavour to complete all licence applications in a timely manner there is no set period because of a number of factors, but not limited to:
  • The complexity of the application;
  • Lack of requisite information provided by applicants;
  • Further information requiring follow-up;
  • Human Resources being available to assess applications and probity to ensure that applicants meet the criteria as being fit and proper, and that there is a genuine need/reason for the possession of a firearm;
  • IT sytem availability.
Not to undertake these checks and balances is likely to put community safety at risk.
Note: If the application is for an ‘Original’ Firearm licence, there is a legislative mandatory 28 day waiting period, which commences after the application has been received at Police Licensing Services prior to the assessment process beginning.
After the initial 28 days, you will receive correspondence from Licensing Services Firearms requesting information which you will need to supply within another 28 days. If the information is not supplied within that time, legislation dictates that your application can not proceed.

Guidelines to obtaining a Firearm Awareness Certificate

  • A firearm awareness test is required to be successfully completed by every first time applicant for the issue of an original Firearm Licence.
  • The test is designed to ensure you understand the basic requirements for the safe handling of firearms and firearm laws in WA
  • The test and supporting information is available through Firearm Dealers or other authorised persons of approved firearm clubs or associations.
  • At the successful completion of the Test, the Firearm Awareness Certificate will be issued.
  • It is valid for 12 months from the date of issue.
  • In the event that the applicant does not successfully pass the test on their first attempt they are excluded from 're-sitting' the test for a period of 24 hours.
  • An applicant is not to be afforded more than three opportunities to complete the assessment and where an applicant has been unsuccessful on three occasions Police Licensing Services are to be notified of this.
  • A copy of the Firearm Awareness Certificate (with the actual test/result – including unsuccessful assessments) should be retained on file at the point of issue.
  • The authorised person issuing the certificate shall ensure all fields are completed in accordance with the explanatory note (as provided).
  • Once completed, the certificate is to be provided to the purchaser/applicant in order that it can be presented with their Application Summary at a participating Australia Post outlet.
  • To minimise errors and possible delays in the application process, it is preferable the certificate be typed and not hand written.
You have to prove that there is a genuine need and/or genuine reason for the firearm you are applying for.
