Morley Markets

It looks very much like the businesses that operated in Morley markets have all lost their livelihood due to the fire that destroyed the building the night before last. Included in the businesses’s that have been lost are probably 3 massage shops and any number of food outlets. A shame for all those affected.

If anyone on here is a regular of any of the shops that have been destroyed maybe in the future we could reach out and find out if they are setting up operations elsewhere and continue to support their business.

Cheers.

It's on the other side of the road I believe, not at the actual markets.

No it is the market itself. I drove past it yesterday lunchtime and saw it cordoned off and checked the news. Across the road is Coventry Village and behind it is Galleria.

Ah fair enough. My mistake

First police thought fire was suspicious but now it appears non-suspicious.
The shops facing Progress St are still open, so is Burma Mart on corner of Progress / Bishop roundabout. Jewellery shop next door looks open too. Other shops facing Bishop St and back end near library are all closed.
Morley Library is closed and being used as a Resource Centre for shops affected by fire. Library re-opens back to normal on Monday.
The Greater Union Cinema in Morley is closing after Sun 14th Sept. Morley Galleria is becoming a ghost town. There is hardly any shops open on level 1. The cinema leaving just makes it more empty.

There's been pretty much no food court at Galleria for quite some time. No Dick Smith/Harvey Norman in the area. Not even a McDonalds.

Went to the Galleria "food" hall a few months ago after not visiting for some time - literally two stalls open, all the rest shut down, (from what I heard the rents were quite extortionate).
There is a Maccas on Walter Rd just up from Coventrys - that burned down a while ago to, but has since been rebuilt.

Morley Market was pretty run down, didn't seem to be much foot traffic in there. An assortment of odd stores. My first thought was insurance job, but it seems not so.

Ah yeah I forgot about the Morley McDonalds.

I too thought the owners were charging too much rent.
McDonalds, Subway, KFC, Nandos and Red Dot were at one time inside Morley Galleria. The food stores have a place outside Galleria. Red Dot moved to Morley Coventry. Was Lucky Charm newsagent inside Galleria at one time? Now Lucky Charm is now at Coventry.
I rarely visit Morley because there is not much there any more. Whereas other shopping centres seem to be busy and doing much better.

As unfortunate as it is that people have lost their businesses and livelihoods, Morley Markrets needed some impetus to do something. Hopefully a nice new centre will be built. MM missed out when the Galleria was refurbished in the 90’s.

It’s great that the Galleria is getting 230 mil spent on it. It was the first regional shopping g centre to upgraded, followed by Carousel, Karrinyup and Midland. However these other centres have upgrades at least 2 or 3 times, while the Galleria has had nothing since the 90s.

Hopefully both centres will be reinvigorated

Sadly I am not sure an upgrade will help Morley Galleria if owners are charging too much. A lot of empty shops vacant. Shoppers like me are relunctant to go there cause there is hardly any shops there. Shop owners will be hesistant to open up a business if not much shoppers there.
If I want to go shopping say like Coles or Woolies and not bump into much people then I think of Galleria. Can easily get a parking spot and get in and out quickly as not much people about. Galleria near Woolies entrance (close to Aldi) parking close to entrance is 2 hours. Other parking further away from front door is 4 hours.
I go to other shopping centres if a want of shops to look at. I also get slowed down by lots of people in shops.

I think all the shop closures are linked to the pending works. At least that’s my assumption. Either way let’s hope this injection of capital gives it the boost it needs.

There are a lot of local Colel/Aldi/Woolies that are a lot more convenient to shop at than Galleria.
No need to walk a mile for grocery shopping at many other locations.
I think you need food halls and cafes for people to have a sit down for shopping in a large mall.
Maybe several locations rather than all stuck at one end of the mall.

Given the high prices at the speciality stores and online shopping I think large malls might have had their day.

I used to eat at the malaysian shop. They had nice curries. I had bad experience with other restaurants. Its good that I did not buy a store there. Three years ago several stores went for sale at cheap prices. But the low traffic have made me think twice.

For anyone interested in helping Morley markets and with the added bonus of having some great BBQ from Big Don’s smoke house mark this one down in your calendar on 4th October. Always great to see good news stories in today’s sad and troubled world.
