I get notified if I've made a comment and there is a new one. Works for me as I don't make many comments so if I want to see more I need to contribute more.
 
If you are to keep it in this order than you need to highlight new posts in the forum index much clearer. Something that stands out as you scroll down the page to locate new posts.
 
I really like the new set up, wasn’t keen on the interim one.

you can filter and set your preferences for last comment. It’s working for me....
