Yes credit cards can be a trap Especially now (as homer once posted) people seem to think the bigger your limit the higher your prestige Oh look I've got a platinum card Sure they give them to high income earners like HP But I bet they love to give them to those they think will max out too
 
Good point about the limit. Keep it at a level you are confident you can repay should you ever need to reach it, and decline the periodic offers to increase it if you cannot handle paying off the higher amount.
