The oldest known photograph was taken by Joseph Nicéphore Niépce in 1826–27. It depicts the view out of Niépce’s upstairs window, and it is extremely low quality.

That would be from about the same era as most of the CCTV images you see released in media reports.

Yes, you are correct.
I was only joking - our advancements allow us to photograph things a gazillion miles into space in microscopic detail, yet still have great difficulty with any clear CCTV vision from say 10 feet away.
World oldest photo
The first camera was actually a dark room with a canvas stretched from wall to wall and ceiling to floor. A small hole to let in the light for the picture to be painted on the canvas by an artist. I got an A+ in photography for my effort in researching that. The teacher kept my assignment to use in future classes.
