What is a white Indian?

Years ago about 40 yrs in fact I saw the best looking man in the world in NZ. Someone said he was a white Indian, and then years later i have a run in with a vice copper and his work mates said he was also a white Indian, I have never figured out what this truly means any help?

My remedial therapist told me one of her Indian male friends has dark skins but wife is white. Both of them have brown eyes. Their daughter has very fair skins with blue eyes.
