Copy of an email I sent to John Bowler Independent member for Kalgoorlie.
Hi John,
I have a group of private ladies 6 strong that want to come and talk to you about the proposed laws for the sex industry. I tried to get you recently and had no response to my emails, hoping this one will get through. I personally want to ask how you are going to vote on this bill. Whilst they seem to have made some amendments they have added many other things like confiscation laws, that the bikies have.
Simply put they are outlawing escorts, this service exists in every city in the world and legal in every state bar SA even NT and Tasmania.
Industry workers get involved in this industry usually because of a desperate need for money to feed the kids or to get rid of welfare services, now they say privates have to find suitable council approved commercial or industrial premises, otherwise hard luck work for the 40 odd approved brothels.
I see that it is just another containment measure not a serious attempt to make something legal and forthright which is the type of law I have always supported. I know the majority of our industry would like a level playing field, but this needs to cover the 40% of ladies that work privately as well as the brothels.
My estimation is that 30% of all work done today is escorting. I have two regular clients in Shenton park doing quadriplegic & Paraplegic rehab, how are these blokes going to source the necessary services. The doctors assure me that it is very important for rehab for these guys to understand their sexual limitations (if any) as quickly as possible, so that they adjust to the new circumstances as quickly as possible.
Any way I hope you get time to read all the sneaky things that have been put into the new bill as the 2nd draft, that don’t appear in the 1st draft, and I hope you are able to let us know where you stand on the issue.
Yours faithfully,
Mary-Anne K
