A man who married a 12-year-old girl in an Islamic ceremony in New South Wales has been jailed for at least seven and a half years.

The 27-year-old man pleaded guilty to the charge of the persistent sexual abuse of a child after he told police he married the girl in the Hunter Valley in 2014.

After he was charged an examination at Westmead Children's Hospital confirmed the girl had an ectopic pregnancy and miscarried.

She was examined after she complained of stomach pain.

Court papers showed the man started texting the girl after he became aware of her at a mosque in late 2013.

The girl, who is now 13, is in the care of authorities

In the NSW District Court Judge Deborah Sweeney gave the man, who cannot be named, a maximum sentence of 10 years with a non parole period of seven and a half years.

He will be eligible for parole in August 2021.

He faced a possible 25-year sentence for the offence.
 
I think from memory you could get married at the age of 12 in Scotland (Gretna Green) until about 1932 when the law was changed. then the marriageable age was lifted to 14.y/o. So not that long ago in western civilization similar things were occurring!

Often the mothers/aunts/female cousins have no say in these strict practices...as they have been treated the same...and live in a combination of ignorance /fear. Even in Australia many of these women are forced to stay at home and not allowed to integrate...

Granted But the Clerics and male families would be aware
And I am sure they know it is illegal under Australian law
 
All well and good until their laws get passed as acceptable... and they are pushing and our govt is soft
Aboriginal law is still not technically legal here... but still some punishments are still carried out within the tribal system
Sharia and the Muslim push will bring great suffering to our way of life

Sharia law is not going to happen because I and millions like me are not going to let it happen the rule of law and trial by judge and jury must be graded and some of the laws enacted on the east coast of Australia should be tossed out ,

Valid point. I'm not sure but I think my grandmother may have gotten married at about 15. When life expectancy was shorter and kids grew up fast, it didn't make much sense to dawdle. But times have progressed since then.

At 12 or similar (the Prophet Muhammad purportedly married a nine-year-old girl) you're still essentially a child. The bigger issue in this case was that this unlawful 'marriage' occurred in 21st century Australia, not 7th century (or for that matter 21st century) Arabia.
 
Well, no sympathy for him from me. The girl was probably brainwashed from an early age to accept this but he, at 27, and presumably having lived in this country for some time should have known better.

Throw the key away and charge the girl's parents along with him.

I believe the guy was told by at least two imams that what he was doing was illegal and unacceptable in Australia so there is no excusing it through ignorance.

Now I cannot respond to this one RB as I would risk completely accidently saying something that could be misconstrued - and I LOOOOOOVE my job - so I shall go all out and say - that is sooo sad and obviously completely untrue :-)
