Scientists have confirmed what women across the globe have been saying for years – that men are sexier when they’re musicians. A study from the University of South Brittany has found that carrying a guitar can increase a man’s chances of getting a date by a third, proof that tunes get the girls. Researchers found that women were 31 per cent more likely to give their phone number to a man carrying a guitar – double the amount than when the same man asked empty-handed. Professor Nicolas Gueguen, a researcher in behavioural sciences at the French university led the study. He hired a 20-year-old actor to approach 300 women aged between 18 and 22 in a shopping centre in downtown Brittany. Each of the 300 girls were told they were 'really pretty' and asked for their phone number to arrange a date. For the first 100 women he held a sports bag as his dating prop, while the next 100 women he approached with a guitar case, and for the final 100 he advanced empty-handed. The guitar-toting dating technique was the clear winner, with 31 per cent of the women handing over digits. When he was carrying nothing, 14 per cent of the women gave them his number. The sports bag yielded the worst results, with a success rate of only 9 per cent.The findings were attributed to a common perception that playing a musical instrument reflects intelligence, independence and a willingness to learn new skills. Of course, every girl knows a musician’s talent speaks volumes for his mysterious complexity and ability to arouse our minds. The results were also accredited to the portrayal of musicians in popular media, where holding a guitar is a status symbol denoting wealth. Sadly however, the musical magic apparently only works for the fellas, as the study found that women were not seen any more or less attractive when carrying a musical instrument.
