Sex work is illegal in South Africa. The closest that it came to changing was in a highly publicised court case two decades ago.

The SA Law Reform Commission came down heavily against legally prostituion in its 2017 report (https://www.justice.gov.za/salrc/reports/r-pr107-SXO-AdultProstitution-2017.pdf). The Law Reform Commission said that it "agrees that the illusion that prostitution is a choice is manipulative and deceptive".
Interestingly, the The Multi-Party Women’s Caucus advocates for the decriminalisation of prostitution:

Blind ideology I think: patriarchy objectifies women, therefore all prostitutes are oppressed. That's my take on the report anyway. Have a read of it and see if you agree?

The oldest profession in the world you'd think there would be more acceptance but then again it's still illegal to be gay in a lot of Africa so I am not shocked.
