Sex with an enlarged prostate

Hello all, I'm looking for some shared information regarding the effects of drugs that are being taken for enlarged prostates on libido and sexual function. Also interested in hearing of sympathetic urologists, I lost my long term doc and his replacement is not to my liking.
My experience is decreased libido and when I do engage in sexual activity difficulty climaxing. With toys I have a climax but no ejaculate (retrograde ejaculation). And prostate stimulation now has no affect.

there has been a few post previously about this issue.

Most of the commonly perscribed medications for BPH (Benign prostatic hyperplasia) are Alpha blockers which are normally the first line treatment for this condition, such as Alpha blockers include alfuzosin (Uroxatral), doxazosin (Cardura), tamsulosin (Flomax) silodosin (Rapaflo) and terazosin. However in many cases the side effects are dizziness, headache, asthenia, postural hypotension, rhinitis, and sexual dysfunction. Specifically, sexual dysfunction has been related to changes in ejaculation (either retrograde or diminished ejaculation).

Recently the American FHA have approved the use of low dose 1 per day use of Cialis (which is also used to treat Erectile disfunction) as a sucessful treatment for BPH.

Mr Isaac Thyer is my Urologist and he said was OK to try Cialis in small doses it’s been more than 12 months now and overall symptoms have improved and no I’ll effects regarding taking the medication, with ejaculation fully returned, happy days !

I also have BPH and have had similar symptoms to you.

My urologist prescribed most of the Alpha Blockers that @LongHair posted above but I found the side effects were not worth it, including the reduced libido you describe.

After discussions with my GP I went on 5 mg Tadalafil (Cialis) daily about 8 years ago and have not looked back.

It is still not on PBS but generics are now cheaper in Australia but I get mine from overseas through an Australian company in 20mg tablets and cut them up which makes it a lot cheaper again.

I have a script from my GP but I have never been asked for it from Customs.

You get less of the side effects with small daily doses of Tadalafil with all of the obvious benefits.

My urologist retired so I just manage mine through my GP and have regular PSA tests.

Worth having a chat to your GP to give it a trial if your current meds are not working for you.

Hope that helps.

I was on BPH medication before that caused all sorts of issues. Couldn't maintain an erection, retrograde ejaculation, body aches, tiredness, lack of strength. Stopped taking it and everything returned to normal. I am going to see Dr Thyer for my prostate and also a very large hydrocele, I will ask him about Cialis and see what he recommends.

So you were able to ejaculate again which is good, did you have any signs of ED and did that improve also?

Yes when I was taking the medcine for BPH I found it hard to maintain an erection, no problem before, however with the daily dose of Cialis this has helped to return this function 😊
Cheers Senfam might have a word with the doctor the only problem might be I also take beta blockers so not sure he’ll agree

I’m in the same boat regarding enlarged prostate and having side effects associated with taking a tablet that supposedly restricts further growth… although my side effects seem to be confined to poor sexual dysfunction. I was recommended trying Cialis but a day after taking the first tablet had a prolonged episode of arterial fibrilation that lasted a week or so. Apparently this is a known side effect that comes with Cialis. Never had the same problem with Viagra or Levitra. Depends on the person as to whether this happens but it is quite scary having your heart beat continually bouncing around between 70 and 140 bpm.

Thanks for your comments, I'm afraid my urologist is trying to sell me the HOLEP laser surgical procedure and he hasn't explained about any other options. The HOLEP procedure can have up to 6 month recovery and the ability to ejaculate is gone forever.

At the moment I'm reasonably comfortable with the medications, apart from the issues described above, which have a solution it seems. However i would be interested to know the frequency of your night visits, mine typically twice a night.

Usually just once , although I have also slept through the night without needing to get up, certainly not multiple times as before.

Before Cialis 2 to 3 times a night now once per night.

If you are not sure about the surgery get a second opinion to discuss other options.

I tried a lot of medications which all had side effects before Cialis.
