Your family gets back the remainder of the body and in the coffin, it is all made up so that is looks 'normal', even the eyelids closed if they took the eyes - but the eyes are always closed anyway, so no one would ever know.
I know of someone who had their whole body donated for medical students to dissect, and the family buried an empty coffin - you dont need a body to have closure, just the ritual.
