Family and friends have always spoken highly about the Ritz Central park and st Regis hotel.

Wouldn't imagine it would be hard to find to a decent hotel in NYC?
 
A good hotel, or a good hotel that is affordable?

There are loads of smaller, less-well known hotels there (New York is a big place). The smaller ones would be a better idea because the big well-known ones are going to charge you for the name and then some. I don't imagine that there is anywhere you could stay in Manhattan for under a couple hundred a night.

I've never been there myself, so can't make any recommendations, though if you share what budget you have you might get some nice recommendations.
 
3 years ago my wife and I fell in love with Park 79 Hotel In the Upper West Side Not 5 Star but old world upper class clas charm
and half the price of some 5 star Still about $2000 for a week though
 
Hotel Metro a couple of blocks from Macys and TImes Square is very nice .. Art Deco and affordable at around $250 per night ...
