Internet security in mining camps often prevents people searching escort sites and private girls personal websites. I am outdated on this info and would love a bit of an update from the flyin flyout miners please.
In most mining camps, as any corporate IT infrastructure, the regulated/logged corporate IT equipment/system will prevent such "personal" usage (unlike the Langtree's IT policy in the workplace that mandates or encourages such access and usage)
However, in designing camp infrastructure and amenities most camps do make provision for mobile voice and data coverage so that the "inmates" can achieve the same outcome using personal devices off the regulated/logged corporate IT system. The problem can be that it is usually a single provider (Telstra/Optus etc) who installs the base for the owner, so the inmate must have a compatible SIM (Hint: there are a number of cheap prepaid SIMs available that can switch to access whatever network is available locally - even the Woolies branded SIM allows this. This is useful especially for contractors who move between various camps with different providers.)
This is also one of the design considerations to help address mental health issues for FIFO as it addresses the sense of isolation and disjunction from normal social relationships with families and loved ones (which should be private and not part of a logged corporate IT system)
Most FIFO camps I have stayed in have their own internet in the rooms. It's something Ive stayed clear of and prefer to use my own cell data so I'm not confined to the parameters of web filtering, and can't have my browsing history tracked. By accessing the camps network you are agreeing not to browse certain data
Even the most remote camps I have stayed at have a telstra tower nearby, which works for me as I'm on Telstra.
The restrictions are the same at most hotels and free public wifi as in the one in Perth & Vic Park but if you have a VPN subscription you can bypass these restrictions and browse anonymously visiting what ever sites or search topics you want.
