Is Sex Regressive or Progressive in todays society?

The history of sexual practices is something that really interests me.

Going back to Roman times, sex was an open practice, with sexual desires being explored regularly and without stigma. As we have moved forward in society - most notably the medieval times, we saw sex become regressive, where both male and females were made to feel guilty if they would have intercourse unless it was to conceive - this meant, humans were ashamed of exploring their sexual desires and fantasies. We saw a revival of sexual exploration during the Victorian period, however this was short lived.

From 1950's to today, we are becoming more open and progressive with sex, however, have we really progressed with sexual exploration, or are we still so far behind where we should be?

What's everyone's thoughts?

Interesting question, this is something that intrigues me as well.

Currently as a western society we’re certainly not as open sexually as in Roman times or other ancient cultures. Though as you point out we have certainly progressed somewhat from the Middle Ages repressive views.

It also depends on where you live in the world and the predominant culture, or even geographically within a country, as sub-cultures will vary in views and open mindedness with regard to sexuality/sexual practices.

I personally think progress still needs to be made in “rediscovering” or exploring sexual practices/sexuality as a “modern” society.

I think the religion has been the biggest factor, the cathloic church mainly responsible, putting the fear of God into the gullible minds of the masses.
These days people seem to have a more open mind although the churches still have a huge fillowing.

In Japanese Shinto, sex isn't taboo. They just so happen to have the best porn and the best developed sex industry in the world. I rest my case.

X generation is the best generation to sex openness but I am not sure if my friends or close mates are into what I am into. This is my dark side that no one knows. I put on two face. Professional at work and slave ro sex after work. Regards CraigG. ps I am into trans and not sure how many how my mates will view it

Depends what you mean by progressive.

Sex is far less visible than it was in some cultures, but sex slaves (including temple prostitutes) are now illegal, marriage now requires the bride's consent, killing/exposing undesired infants is now illegal, and sex without consent is now illegal - even within marriage. Male-male sex was socially acceptable in Roman society, but only if you were the inserter.

Prima Nocta (lords' right for the first night) may be a myth, because lords could actually have serfs whenever they wanted.

I think we are moving towards something sensible, but be wary of ancient texts. They are either graffiti, as boring as a ledger or biased.
