Hurting my subs nicely

As a Domme I am fascinated and very excited when exploring the pain limits of my subs. However, I don't consider myself sadistic. It's knowing that my sub is experiencing something special when they get into sub space that I enjoy. That's why I always break up impact play with gentle caresses and sometimes a full body rub.
I'm interested to here how other Doms/Dommes approach impact play and what subs want when they are receiving impact play.
