How Australian is Australian??

Just finished watching a movie with Australian Russel Crowe in it and then I started to think to myself...

How many of our Australian stars are really Australian.
Sure maybe some were born here but they spend most of thier time living overseas and start to use thier Australian status only when it suits them.
As much as we love our Australian heros is it fair that they do this??

Please correct me if I`m wrong or feel free to add to the list...

Russel Crowe spends most of his time living in the
Paul Hogan spends most of his time living in the US.
Olivia Newton John spends most of her living in the US.
Nicole Kidman spends most of her time living in the US.
Heath Ledger spent most of his time in the US.
Kylie and Danni Minogue spend most of thier time living in the UK.
AC/DC spend most of thier time living overseas.
John Farnham only became Australian a couple days before becoming Australian of the Year 1987.

Like I say... some were born or arrived as young kids here but where is it they spend most of thier time now?? Is some of it as AC/DC confessed once, a tax thing that makes them live overseas??
 
I think they do use their Australian status when it suits them but at the same time I do think they are genuinely proud to be Australian. I've seen Nicole Kidman in plenty of interviews and she is so down to earth and she does have property's in Australia. Its understandable why they do spend heaps of time overseas cause thats where most of the work is.
 
It is a combination of factors.

For serious actors Australia is a backwater and no-one will take you seriously unless you "make it" in the U.S. or Europe.There just aren't the opportunities here. If a Band like Ac/Dc confined themselves to Australia people would soon get tired of them so it is best that they go world-wide and take it to a wider audience.

Doesn't mean they are any less Australian.
 
So far the replies seem to still think of them as being Australian which is fair, so what about when they go to fill in thier tax return?? Can anybody inform me if they have to follow Australian tax law??? or do they suddenly not call Australia home and simply follow whatever country they are in tax laws if it is better for them??
 
I agree with emilee, most are genuinely proud to be Australian and moving overseas is the best option to boost their careers.

If you moved overseas forever, billybones, would you still consider yourself Australian??

Exactly right Sarah! If I followed my career path, I'd be stuck in Israel for years!

That's the beauty of being Australian. Doesn't matter where you live, as long as your proud to be an Aussie.

I believe there are laws in regards to tax returns but I'd imagine different countries would have different benefits!
 
Yes I would and be proud of it. I think the point I am trying to say is that most of them seem to ignore thier naionality and only use it when it is more benificial to them.
 
Yes thats true..but....Everyone uses things to their advantage and benifit when it suits them, it's just the fact that they're celebrities so it's shown a lot more.
Little off subject....but....
Ie. Kylie Minogue and Delta Goodrem get cancer. Breast cancer foundation spreads their stories all over the news to get awareness out there again, instead of using everyday australians that are dealing and have delt with it.
They used the fact that they're Australian and celebrities, when they would have rather been left alone

I can remember when they did that...
I guess that poses another question. Do the stars have the right to privacy?? If I give the example of Lleyton and Bec Hewitt or Kyle Sanderlands and his wife. While they were being paid to show inside thier private life it was all smiles but as soon as it soured they cried foul...

Like the old saying.. Being famous has it`s price
 
It certainly does but i think at the same time everyone deserves privacy but i guess when your being paid big money to entertain, its to be expected.

My next door neighbour is somewhat famous in sports circles and his GF shared a story from the other night. They went out for dinner and a bloke came and sat and the table uninvited and ordered everything he did and ate an entire meal with them, ignoring his family. He can hardly make a big deal about it in a crowded restaurant with people already looking at him. Not to mention what would happen if it got into the papers / news.

Still, when they are on 500K+ a year they simply have to accept it and stay out of trouble.
 
Small things amuse small minds and I often used to chuckle and think to myself how hard it must have been for Prince Phillip to snog Queen Elizabeth for the first time especially with all the bodyguards watching and how hard would it have been to be a bodyguard to sit and watch Price Harry get drunk and go crazy at all these parties and not have the power to stop him.
 
Wow! thats not good! exactly right billybones, being famous comes at a price. You can't foul up with out it being in every paper, and i bet the guy tries to sell his story bout having dinner with someone famous, and if he was escorted out he'd flip the story and try sell that too!

of course stars have the right to privacy, they are human! but also they kinda know the things that come with being a celebrity and you have to prepare yourself for having every inch of your life photographed and watched. if you don't want it then don't be a celebrity i guess.
