We are a bit late starting this interview and was hoping to get Amanda to start it of and ask me some interesting questions.We've been so busy this last two weeks I thought I'd start it myself.You are welcome to ask me any questions about any subject that you'd like and I promise to answer all honestly.I'll start you off......
Why did I go into the adventurous adult market?
I've been thinking about the possibility for four years now ever since I visited a club in New-York.and London.I had a great night and met some very interesting people and a great time and my brain started ticking over, surely Perth would have a maarket place for such a club.Every time I travelled since then if I've had the oppurnity I've checked out clubs in other countries and other states.The oppurnity came about 4months ago when a particularly good property became available in Burswood close to Langtrees.Once I started working with the councils I realised that approvals were going to take three to six months to organise with out the guarantee of sucees.
Then Sarah saw a advert for a exsisting club for sale.From their it went very quickly.I personally would have perferred the firstclub closer to the city but this club already had full council approval to trade four nights a week.It needed extensive renovations and these started as quickly as I could and hey pesto 6 weeks later we have LP's The Ladies Playground.
This club will give me the oppurnity to test out some new idea's and also I'll be able to use this club as a example for other council application in the future.
Since it has become public I have caused a lot of debate in the regular swinging market place.Some has been good and some has been negative but I'm the sort of person that loves a challenge and I've found the last six weeks stimulating and exciting.I must admit before that I'd become a little bored with life.

Hopefully by Easter next year a club for 150 people in Burswood.Planning 6 clubs over 18 months all aroun Western Australia.Mandurah should happen about the same time give or take 6 weeks
 
I am glad to hear that you are definately going to have some clubs that are closer to town. I love going to LPs but it is a bit of a hike from home.....
Still it hasn't stopped me for venturing out to LPs.....
and guess what?
I will be there this Wednesday for the sex lesson - HOW TO GIVE A GREAT HEAD JOB!!!!

Seriously their is no such thing as perfect to make a relationship work you have to work at it.Surprisingly I've been recycling the last two or three years going out with old partners and having fun because we've got history and that counts as you get older.I can tell you since I've been ten yrs old I been in lust with Maverick "James Garner" now that man can put his slippers under my bed any time he likes.

not that i have been stalking you or anything but i have followed your work for a little while and what influence you have had over the Perth (and Kal) business communities with some sence of amazment(and awe). do you find that the general public dont understand or more choose not to want to know what you are about but just go on hearsay?

Thanks for the question, personally I don't get that much critiscm from the general public and often you have to read through the lines in the media reports.Quite often the attention I attract is my own fault because I am a little impatient and like to bulldoze a little.If I waited around for officaldom to give permission I'd never get anything done.I do find in most cases if you are honest and upfront about what you want to do most councils and departments will be practible about the solution.This happened in Kalgoorlie when they gave me approval to build the new bordello as a guest house and then freaked out because the lounge and restuarant could seat 70 people.Under that approval you could only seat 40 guests.We got together and sorted it out by changing the zoning to a motel zoning but alas I didn;t have enough car parking and had to fork out $150,000 to buy the land across the road for excess parking that has never been neccesarry.You've got to give and take to go forward .

The ladies Playground is a swingers night club where singles & couples get together for a great night out.The only difference from a bar is that we also have private and group rooms available if people want to explore their sexual side with out having to go to one anothers place.Sometimes their is a lot of action and other times its just social.People are much more friendly and social because to go they have to be a little adventurous and we also have a sauna ans spa which peole are in and out of.I like the nights when every one tries dirty dancing and the guys towels fall off but then I am a voyeur at heart.

If you want maryanne untill the spell checker is sorted out, you could type what you want in a works or words file, use the spell check there, then copy and paste. Can save a bit of time as well. I do that quite often when i am posting in chat rooms or forum ands typing long.

I got a phone call about ten years ago,” Mary-Anne recalls. The woman said to me “You won’t remember me from a bar of soap but I applied for a job at the brothel about two years ago and you talked me out of it. I just wanted to thank you – I’m getting married tomorrow.”

In fact, Mary-Anne Kenworthy, Perth’s best known and most controversial ex-madam, has discouraged many from becoming sex workers, especially young girls.

Dressed in a black jumper and trousers, with the minimum of make-up and fuss, she sits totally relaxed at a desk peppered with papers. The open plan offices of Image International Pty Ltd, the business end of the brothel, are bright and spacious and a world away from the dimly lit nightclub ambience of “the floor” downstairs where four girls sit in evening dress, waiting and chatting idly amongst themselves. Langtrees, Perth, is open 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year and employs up to 60 girls. It has 17 themed rooms designed by Mary-Anne, ranging from the 15 minute rooms to the luxurious ‘Sultan’s Tent.’
While prostitution is technically illegal in Western Australia, brothels are tolerated by the government. As a brothel owner, Mary-Anne is constantly teetering on the brink of illegality, though it seems she has been testing boundaries most of her life.

Born in Rotorua, New Zealand, she was the eldest daughter of seven children. Her father was a truck driver and her mother ran the general store. Mary-Anne admits that life was tough and often the family lived on only one income. Despite this hardship, she says “We were probably the best fed and best dressed kids in the street.” Pregnant at 15, she left school and was sent away to have the baby for adoption. “I was in hospital six weeks … The doctors never spoke to me. Nobody spoke to me. I didn’t know what was going on. You just coped …” Mary-Anne kept the baby, returned home and ran the general store while her Mum stayed home and minded the child. Her son Jeffery is now 28.

At 26, a failed marriage behind her and three young sons to support single-handedly, Mary-Anne reached a turning point in her life. She became a sex worker. “I had half a dozen boyfriends at that stage. I thought ‘hey, they come round and drink my beer, smoke my cigarettes and they’re getting it all for nothing,’” she explains. Money was the main incentive to enter the sex industry but pride also played its part. “I was going to apply for the single Mum’s benefit … and then I thought ‘oh, bugger it, I’ll go and try one of these massage parlour jobs first.’ Anyway, it’s a hell of a lot easier to work at night time, get your kids to school, sleep during the day and get up again after school.”

Unknown to her family, she became a working girl for almost two years.


It gave me a lot of strength, … it is in some ways a power trip.” It also gave her enough money to migrate to Perth where she worked briefly at an escort agency before buying it. “I felt that I could run it for a year, make a million dollars and bugger off back to New Zealand,” she jokes. “I was broker at the end of the year than I was when I got there!” she laughs infectiously.

When she did tell her family, she recalls: “My mother was pretty horrified. My father was running down the road telling everybody!”
Nowadays Mary-Anne is much more candid about her business.

Rarely confronted with animosity, undoubtedly the career choice has impacted on her family and while Mary-Anne has no qualms courting publicity as a brothel owner, she is undeniably protective when it comes to her three grown-up sons and her young daughter.
Mary-Anne’s second son, Stephen, now a high school teacher living in Mandurah, says when he was younger his mother’s occupation did bother him, “but I wouldn’t lose a night’s sleep over it,” he says. “Hardly anyone knew at Hale School till Year 12, then I didn’t care.”
Driven by an obsession to “change things and improve things”, Mary-Anne now concentrates on management and introducing compulsory sex industry standards and regulations. She is a passionate and enthusiastic campaigner for the legalisation of prostitution in Western Australia. Her long time acquaintance and business associate, Leigh Varis, describes Mary-Anne as the person to see if you are in trouble. “She’s like a rock,” says Leigh. “Fair but firm”, “strong-willed” and “stubborn” are attributes which have stood her in good stead as a pioneer of change within the sex industry. Monthly medical checks for all girls and full training including advice on checking clients for STD’s and how to say “no” to clients are mandatory at Langtrees.

The redevelopment of Langtrees 181 in Kalgoorlie is a testament to Mary-Anne’s audacious business acumen and a bold move considering Western Australia’s pendulous stance on prostitution.

Her ambition is to make the industry more open. “I’d like people to be aware of the good that it does as well as the bad. I would like to educate people that because somebody uses the sex industry, it doesn’t necessarily mean that they’re bad.” She tells how the mother of a 26 year old man with muscular dystrophy, who only had a short time to live, had asked a neighbour to take him to Langtrees “to feel human companionship which he had never felt in his whole life,” and how a widower who had nursed his wife through cancer for seven years had visited the brothel “for confidence” before looking for a new partner. “A brothel is not just a sexual place, it’s a company place. People come here to relearn,” she explains.
At 46 and still single, Mary-Anne successfully combines business with parenthood, enjoying an extremely close relationship with her teenage daughter, Rylie.

The prospect of slowing down is dismissed as fantasy. A golfing tour of Australia, travelling the world, expanding the website, working for the Red Cross and heading a local newspaper are all on the agenda. “I want to sail around the Mediterranean with a yacht full of toy boys,” she laughs.

Until then, this remarkably forthright and down-to-earth mother of four remains Perth’s most vocal spokesperson on the sex industry, is a committed member of the South Perth Rotary Club and in her rare leisure time is pursuing her latest passion, golf, for which a prized and recently awarded trophy sits on display in the office.

At the end of the day, Mary-Anne sells sex. “It’s a successful business and I think I have done it well but it’s not something I’m proud of getting into … I’ve just done it the best I can.”

Longest relationship is 30 years still get on with my first ex husband, The longest I was married was 9 years The second time was 8 years ans have been dating my ex for the last two years.
My mantra is today is the first day of the rest of my life, and everyday I try to something for some one else.Let them in when the traffic is busy, change the loo rolls,etc etc.The other thing is I like to learn something new everyday and never take no as a answer.

Not at all.In the 20 years I've worked in the industry very rarely lost anything,I find if you give out trust you get it back.

Every now and then I get burnt but again thats life ,and learning. I refuse to change my personality because of it and try not to be too judemental of others.

I haven't interviewed the new girls for three or four years now.Firstly the ladies must approach us directly at Langtrees and secondly I prefer experienced workers over new starters.Mary-Anne
