Sorry I haven't been around - just back a week from a lovely holiday to Scotland.

Since I got back been very busy with the legalization issue. I submitted my submission and now have to lobby all the politicians and support groups. I know I said I had done my bit, that it was time to move over for the young ones, but I got incredibly lucky finding a legal and sex industry worker that was quickly able to grasp my point of view and she has researched the issues and written our submission.

All I can say is it is brilliant and I think possible to be used to achieve the industry's needs.

I am going to offer it to our regular members by request only for the first 4 weeks. This service is only available to the participating members of TalkinSex, the regulars of Langtrees and dedicated sex workers.

I have read the submission and must say job well done to both Claudia and Maryanne.

It is written in the language of the law (appropriately so, as it is a submission to the law makers themselves) and presents itself in a constructive yet firm tone.

I took a look at it on the weekend and have just a couple questions if you don`t mind and if the answer was in there somewhere I apoligize.

You mention that you feel that the workers info be held at the premises and should only be shown to a member of the police force with a high ranking, but what hapens if a disgruntled employee was to somehow access the files.
I know it may be an added cost but what about if the info was held by the brothels lawyers instead and can only be shown when the employee is present?

What happens when a worker does not want to work for a brothel but work for themselves only, I know they want it out of the private streets but some workers may only want to do it to cover a few bills and not want to work long term.

I agree that all the workers should be able to receive advice on both medical as well as emotional issues that may stem from thier line of work and that this should always remain in confidence.

It would be nice if we were able to somehow take away all the bad stigma of being a W/L and be able to show the general public that it can simply be a job for some people and it shouldn`t be thought of as taboo.

my submission as based on the fact that if re written the proposed bill could be made to be workable.
I have since found that was being idealistic and this bill would have to rewritten from scratch.
I beieve that we would have some reprehensibility for some record keeping but agree that something would have to be written in to protect all working persons privacy.

I`m sure that it`s not easy to find a solution that is going to please everybody but it would be nice if more of the politicians took the time to listen to everybody and not a small minority.
The more heads thinking and discussing then surely the better...

The Submission was tailored towards the Attorney General, with a twofold aim of encouraging them to rework the Bill in its entirety incorporating the points raised, or alternatively to amend various sections to minimise the most damaging and concerning aspects. The Submission was by no means complete in terms of every little detail and if/but scenario because to do so would have resulted in 100 pages and the crux of the points being made would have been lost. Rather it was to serve as a guideline and encourage subsequent consultation when the details could be worked out.

With respect to the storage of identification, this was a way of finding middle ground between the government's aim of ensuring that those who work are working legitimately and the protection of identity. From an identity perspective I agree it would be completely preferable if no identification was recorded anywhere because as you point out there is a risk of exposure, and in many jurisdictions where prostitution is legal there isn't recording of identity anywhere. However, given the perspective from which the government was coming - licensing all prostitutes and prohibiting anyone who was not a permanent resident of Australia from working - that did not seem like a stance they would accept. There are also arguments that for the industry to ensure its own legitimacy it needs to be prepared to stand up for its own legitimacy.

My thoughts when I was putting it together was that the identification would be kept in lockable storage and only accessible by the most senior employees. Of course there is still a risk of identity exposure by a disgruntled employee, but I think there's two points to make about that. The first is that administrative staff often conceal their identity as much as the prostitutes themselves and therefore for them to go down the path of exposing others would mean exposing themselves. The second is that the risk of identity exposure is never going to be completely eliminated, even if it comes down to the fact that a worker may leave their personal wallet lying around and someone pick it up or a person from a worker's personal life comes onto the premises and sees them.

With respect to an individual wishing to work for themselves and not in a brothel to begin with, only to discover after a few days that it isn't for them, and having had to go through the registration procedure in the meantime, my personal opinion is that that is not something that should be catered for. Firstly, an individual cannot just become a plumber or an electrician for a few days because they feel like it and in order for the sex industry to gain a level of legitimacy there has to be some preparedness for it to behave in a legitimate manner. Secondly, if an individual is going to work privately they will already have to make a fair level of commitment to get that underway by organising photographs and posting them on a private website, purchasing the required items to work and getting the various health checks. Whilst the issue of registering is a bit different because that runs the risk of identity exposure, so long as there is a clause that the details can be removed from the register, I think that is the best that can be offered. If an individual wants to work privately then I think they need to be prepared to make the commitment. Thirdly, from a health and safety perspective, for a person who is only going to 'try' working and may likely give it up, in my personal opinion it is better that they have their experience in a brothel where they have access to support networks, information on how to work and a level of security. Of course there are women who go straight into the private route and continue working there, but someone who is of a level of vulnerability that they can't continue, is at risk of a lot of personal damage.
