Increasing numbers of Australian women are asking their doctors for a designer vagina. So many, in fact, that the government is reviewing whether such surgery should be publicly-funded via Medicare.

Over the last ten years, claims through the medical benefit scheme (MBS) for labioplasty have increased from 200 to over 1,500 per year. The resulting cost, rising from $40,000 to $740,000 annually, has led to a government review questioning the procedure.

The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists strongly discourage labioplasty, unless there are compelling medical reasons. They cite a range of potential complications, including scarring, permanent disfigurement, infection, pain, and altered sexual sensations.

So why are so many Australian women demanding labioplasty, a surgical operation that involves reduction of protruding labial tissue surrounding the vagina? The main reason given is dissatisfaction with the appearance of the genitals.

This dissatisfaction is not unusual in the general population. One study found over 50% of women felt unhappy with the size or appearance of their labia. In another, over 40% of women had considered genital surgery.

The dramatic increase in genital dissatisfaction over the last decade is not due to changes in women’s anatomy. It’s due to changing social views on what is a “normal” vulva and vagina. A prepubescent, hairless, Barbie doll appearance now stands as the ideal.

Pornography is partly to blame, depicting women’s genitals as a slit, with no visible labia at all. But the Australian censorship board enshrines such practices in law by allowing only “discrete genital detail” to be shown.

The airbrushing of photographs of women’s genitals is the inevitable consequence. The fact that women requesting labioplasty bring such images to their doctors as a model for surgery shows the insidious nature of pornography’s influence.

But how else can heterosexual women find out what “normal” female genitals look like? Outside of pornography, women’s genitals are culturally invisible. The days of self-examination in feminist consciousness-raising groups, when women used a mirror and speculum to explore their vaginas, are long gone.

This is a shame. If we dared to look, we would find that the majority of adult women look very different from the photographs depicted in pornographic magazines. A recent study of genital size in 50 women found huge variation, with most women having protruding labia, not a simple slit.

Medical textbooks ignore this fact, depicting women’s genitalia with smaller proportions than even those shown in pornography. Labia that protrude in a normal way are described as “hypertropic” (abnormal enlargement), but there’s no clear guidance on what level of protrusion merits such diagnosis.

With all this in mind, it’s not surprising that many women are referred for labioplasty without a physical examination, as the woman’s complaint of “abnormal” labial shape or size is simply accepted. When an examination is conducted, women are still referred for treatment, even if their labia are in the normal range.

The medical profession may simply be guilty of believing that they can make women happy by acquiescing to their requests for genital surgery. Yet many women are sexually dissatisfied or anxious about their genitals after surgery and, for some women, labioplasty is just one of many cosmetic surgery procedures undertaken.

This is not to criticise women who seek such surgery. It’s difficult to resist the idealised images of female sexuality that surround us. The reality of the female body has been airbrushed for centuries, with artists depicting the nude with a vaginal slit and no hair. All notions of seepage – flesh or fluid – are completely removed from the frame.

The current popularity of Brazilian waxing (removing all pubic hair) has made prepubescent genital the new norm. It also draws attention to labial skin that would otherwise be concealed, a further explanation for the increased numbers of women seeking labioplasty.

Rather than subjecting women who are dissatisfied with their genitals to the surgeon’s knife, we need to inform them, and their partners, about what is normal. Some surgeons show women images of the wide range of female genitals to try to dissuade them from labioplasty.

Artists, photographers, women’s blogs, and feminist actiongroups have also joined the quest to normalise and celebrate the diversity of women’s genitals.

The real issue here is women’s dissatisfaction with their bodies. We should be challenging the unrealistic images and expectations that perpetuate this unhappiness, not cutting into women’s flesh.

For the Ladies;

Are you happy with your Vagina?
Are there people who have considered labiaplasty?
Have they done it?
How did that work out for you?
Have you ever received any kind of negative remark about your vagina?

For the Men;

Does it matter to you either way what a womans vagina looks like?
Are you less likely to have sex with a woman who has a less than "pretty" vagina?
How would you feel about a woman you were seeing, or married to oneday decided she wanted to have labiaplasty?

Speaking as someone who suffers from a visible congenital curvature (yes, I have been questioned once or twice; mocked even by several W/Ls about this) - I neither condone nor repel against the values or benefits (moral or otherwise) of sexual surgery. For those who don't know - congenital means "before" or "at-birth".

However, speaking as someone who's also; just like as any other human beings who are attracted to porn - there are I believe - limits (either in implicit or explicit manner) to everything surrounding cosmetic surgeries / endowments.

Take a look below;

marvelous_babe_in_prison_9.jpg

She's hot everything and everywhere else.

Except, a little sadly however apart from this. My right hand sort of think twice.

From all the W/Ls (caucasians & asians) I've been with I can be honestly as picky as two things - make sure she's lean, and shaven clean. But I do not expect / never to the point where things have to be eliminated / gone too far. Personally, I think the labia is there as an added barrier of protection (by my own means of logic. Nothing else) in fact, I expect to see some of it.

That's just me. It is completely up to a lady's and and to use her own financial's sake for attraction. Only one thing to keep in mind - surgeries are there as a choice only if the problem hampers functionality. Understandably, this last resort has been making itself compelling & attractive to pursue; simply because of growing anxiety.

Like in that video Desire83 puts it - where you can see all the actual vagina 'casts' of all the willing participants. And well, guess what? Everything about them just remain exactly as I would expect and have seen out of amateur porn on regular basis. nothing hideous. nothing out of place. Just nothing out of ordinary.

Unless if a lady is obese or just immediately unhealthy - there is nothing that should be fussed over. There are LOTS of other things instead of her pussy to improve / work on.

Interesting thread to watch nonetheless.

Sometimes at the gym I go to, you get the older ladies from their mid to late 50s onwards in the changeroom. I almost had nightmares when one of them undressed in front of me and you could see her vagina flaps wobble and shake like sheets drying on a washing line!

Shudder! The horror! The horror!

Same thing occurs in the male changerooms, well if not worse today @ FF Balga that I've encountered more hairy elderly manflaps than I really had to. Well, hopefully off I go for triceps tomorrow @ innaloo instead!

What a complete crock!! I see this as yet another avenue for greedy quacks to prey on the insecurities of women.

Surgery should be the last resort and only in cases of severe deformation or functional problems should responsible surgeons carve up a woman's genitals. Every cut everywhere leaves a scar, some worse than others, and these can end up looking worse than the original problem the surgeon was trying to correct. Let us not forget that general anaesthesia is also a risk - a small one but one not to be taken lightly.

The lady in Honestman's post is a classic example. I am not sure if it is the angle or the lighting but her labia do look a little asymmetrical.

So what?

Presented with that view and the rest of that gorgeous body would I run screaming from the room?

Would anyone else?

Nup! I didn't think so.

Put the knives away.

I encountered this is Bangkok many years ago. You could get your vagina created to look like a butterfly. Seemed absurd to me at the time.
Recently while back home in NZ a group of my friends were discussing the use of steroids.
As a lot of us know men on steroids run the risk of serious reduction in penis size. Well 1 of my close friends is a female body builder and was a long term abuser of steroids. She explained to us that it has the opposite effect on woman. It dramatically increases the size of the labia.
Have to be honest here it really surprised.
My friend who is not shy at all showed us and I was shocked at the extent of her problem. She is currently saving for a trip to Thailand but of course has a number of concerns. Will she loose sensation as she is very highly sexed.
Any moral to my story. Avoid steroids and avoid men who partake also. I like my vagina just the way it is xx
