I think it tends to depend on the situation.
If you already have 5 boys, and want a girl, then I can see why you would want to do this. If you were only able to have one child for whatever reason, maybe you would want to make sure it was the sex that you wanted.
However, I am not of the philosophical persuasion where I think everything happens for a reason, I see many things happening around us which have no reason apart from pure scientific fact. For instance, what would the "reason" be for the Christchurch earthquake where over a hundred people are killed, including 2 young babies? The REASON for that was the tectonic plate shift, but apart from that there is no reason that one could quote to me that I would be happy with which would explain that to my satisfaction. Which is why I think people could take control of their lives more, and if they want to choose the sex of their baby, good for them.
It does of course bring up other moral issues, which I think is what you may be getting at Maree. What if the selection process doesen't work and you end up with the sex that you didn't choose? Do you then abort that baby and try again? I myself would have moral issues around abortion for that reason.
What about applying the selection process to babies who could or would be born with some kind of disability? Should we eliminate that possibility too? There is a moral issue right there. It seems there is talk of a criminal gene, should we isolate that, and eliminate those people, too?
So, there are many divergent issues that could be said to be related to this topic. My personal opinion on gender selection of your baby is that it is ok to do it, but if it is not successful, be happy with what you have got, as you can't control everything.
