I used to work in the city in a building on Hindmarsh Square. My office was right in the corner on the 1st floor with views of Pulteney Street and the square. Thirty years ago ... my wonderful, crazy 25 year old girlfriend of that time ... at a typical Australia Day backyard barbeque, slow dancing of a sort under a blanket ... a pleasant evening on the grass at the edge of the Swan River, Perth, adjacent to what was then a busy road, Riverside Drive ... and then there was one particularly eventful night - dolled up in her favourite full-length flared taffeta skirt - in the lobby bar of what was then the Sheraton Perth Hotel.

I still drop by these days for an occasional drink at the Pan Pacific Perth Hotel ... 🍸

I first stayed at the Sheraton Hotel back in 1978. It was Perth's first luxury hotel and way before the America's Cup in 1987 Perth was a very cheap place to stay. I think Parmelia (?) was another one. $30 a night for a 5 star hotel believe it or not. I ended up partying with the World Series cricketers, but that's another story.

The thing is, it was viewed by people in Perth as some sort of status symbol. I was in t-shirt, shorts and thongs, hopped into a taxi and said I may not look like it but was staying at the Sheraton. The taxi driver said, "I believe you, the people I drop off who are well dressed are socialites who just want to be seen at the hotel".

Anyway, they used to have a disco which was very popular, and all you really had to do to pick up was tell a girl you were staying at the hotel. It was like magic. Put down the drink, hop into the elevator, up to the room for the night. I met a couple of blokes at the cricket and was invited to a party where I met a very cute blonde girl. The moment I said I was staying at the Sheraton she says, "Oh, I'd love to spend a night at the Sheraton Hotel". Her wish was my command.

I was there for three weeks and never had so much sex with so many different girls in my life. Being with the cricketers helped as well. In the lead up to the America's Cup, many high rise hotels were built, and the Sheraton just blended into the skyline. As you say, it's the Pan Pacific Perth Hotel now, but I'll always cherish the memories. I really must go back there one day and see what it's like.

Ah yes, Osman ... yours are the stuff of memories that we wish were ours too ... 🥳

Just to fill in the historical blanks, the Parmelia Hotel was effectively the 'one and only' until along came the much larger Sheraton Perth Hotel in the early 70s ... the former morphed into the Parmelia Hilton Hotel and it is currently undergoing redevelopment.

These hotels competed in so many ways, including their respective discos / nightclubs ... the Parmelia had Juliana's which was an intimate setting located deep inside the hotel ... the Sheraton had Clouds which had an entrance near Adelaide Terrace separated from the hotel lobby and which attracted a broader group of clientele. Back in the day, I'd never have considered getting a room ... silly me !!!

Thanks for that, I'm not sure I even knew Sherton's disco was named Clouds. Great memories though. 👍

Is this public enough - example of a public play room at one of Perth swingers clubs that took the convid lock down as an opportunity for some remodelling.

I'm sure @Mrs Langtrees will recognise the furniture :cool:
