It's all about bad drivers, mostly drug-influenced hung over drivers, tradies and contractors who've over committed, Uber drivers and delivery drivers rushing from one place to another because business is so good. And of course there are morons! People are rushing and being very reckless. Look how many fatal accidents have been reported daily.

Last week, in the month of May, I heard an interview with a police spokesperson on the radio. Just for this month to date 1100 people have been given infringement tickets for using a mobile phone while driving. All this despite so much publicity! 73 fines a day for this one offence in Perth.

Look at the article. In one of the paragraphs it says last year Perth motorists paid $100 million in speeding and red light fines alone! God knows how much more for not wearing seat belts, using mobile phones, driving drunk or drugged or both.

In my opinion there is too many electronic distractions in cars now , if you fart an alarm goes off . Don't worry about people being on their phones, what about when they start using the navigation system and blue tooth for music . This creates more distractions.

I agree except for one thing about the fart alarm. When I fart, I get alarmed myself. Worse still I can't blame the dog because it's not in the car.:)

I think the question should be, are roads safer today than 30-40 years ago? I know from my teenage years a lot of us are lucky to be alive.
I agree. We have less than a third of fatalities and injuries compared to the early 70s, despite a quadrupling of population and cars on the road. In fact we should be celebrating this achievement rather than for example constantly berating the average motorist for driving 10kmh over the speed limit.

Thanks, Voice. I knew our driving wasn't as erratic and stupid as in our teenage years, and twice the cars and 2/3rd fewer fatalities prove we are getting better.

All it really proves is that cars are safer, better crumple zones ,air bags ,crash avoidance systems and even better seat belts. To say we are better drivers there needs to be a stat of serious accidents per 100 000 cars on the road or some other true comparison.
I think as we get older we become more responsible and take less risks thus becoming safer drivers as we age.

Well, I think even teenage drivers are better than we were in our day, when we took so many bloody silly risks.

Western Australia has recorded the nation’s highest increase in road deaths in the 12 months to May, with advocacy groups concerned that national work to reduce the toll is failing.
Despite Federal and State governments agreeing to the National Road Safety Strategy, the statistics show 178 people died on WA roads between June 2022 and last month — a 17 per cent increase compared to the same period a year prior.
