This is from a website - International Sex Guide. The Perth section's quite dead sadly.

Yes Quickfix, it was the Scarlet Garter! The the other place I referred to was Lisa's Retreat (in Guildford Rd). I believe Lisa's son had some drug problems, the Scarlet Garter burnt down and poor old Lisa ended up losing everything. Shame, I knew her, nice lady.
Purrrv said:

Monger St, do you mean the converted house on William St near the corner of Monger. That was Jade House, the setting of my first paid experience (major cringe!), in hindsight surprised why I ever did it again!

Jade house was owned by Dorrie Flatman who also owned Aphrodites, the two storey establishment across the road. Aphrodites, in its day, was one of the up market establishments. No such things as showers then, just a bowl of lukewarm water and a flannel for the appendage in question!

They're both gone now, Dorrie joined forces with Dee (Dee's Sweethearts formerly of Edward St) and they're now operating from 55 Short St. Seems like half the madams in Perth have operated at ol 55. (Asian International Annie & Anna-stasia being the latest)

Oh what fun to reminisce.
Hi Purrrv,

The Jade House I’m thinking of was the private house on Monger St about halve way alone on the left going away from William St. The other place was on Brisbane St down the road from the Brisbane pub, which is now a back packers! Yes I remember the bowl of warn water with a dash of dettol and the bedside lamp and the flannel. Those were the days.

Lisa retreat was also a good place, I met a lovely Egyptian girl there can’t remember her name but she was a stunner!

Bring back the good old days!

Cheer’s Quickfix"

Was Lisa's owned by Dorrie Flatman as well? She'd be a great person to interview for this forum.

No not Dorrie Flatman I did know who owned Lisas and the Scarlet Garter but have forgotten. the owner was a pyromaniac with a Marilyn Monroe fixation ,

I can remember passing La Cherie many times as it was opposite McIver train station. Casey's Only closed down a few years ago and there was a fire at the rear of the building early last year. Not much damage though.

I seem to remember that lisa's retreat was operating on the other side of Guildford road to where her last establishment was, in 1972 at least, because my mates sister worked there for a time in those days and sometimes I would pick her up after work and give her a lift home.
I also had the odd punt there as late as late 1980, then she moved across the road near the corner of eighth ave and Guildford road

I just remembered that lisa's name was lisa munroe or Monroe, I think some time after all her dramas she opened an establishment in west Leederville

While writing my last post I suddenly thought of another establishment where grand prom meets the railway line at meltham, it was called pussycats something, my mates sister worked there for a short time as well, this was 72-75.

I seem to remember is was owned by one Ronald F Heelan of randy's wreckers fame who later called himself Ron Gold and the days calls himself Bon Levy , who last time i heard of him was to do with bikini girls massage parlours

From the Canberra Times in 1988

Perth brothel owner says wealth lies in police policy
PERTH: Brothel owner Dorrie
Flatman says she has the Western
Australian police to thank for making
her a wealthy woman in Perth, ac
cording to a British TV program.
In an interview screened on the
BBC in Britain on Friday, Mrs Flat
man said the police's containment pol
icy on prostitution had prevented new
brothels opening in Perth.
She revealed there were 200 women
working in Perth's 16 contained
brothels, with another 120 working
outside the system.
The BBC program, presented by
Alan Whicker, was part of a series on
the lives of successful British mi
grants in Australia.
Mrs Flatman, who left Liverpool in
1963 with her three daughters and
only £45, was described in the pro
gram as one of Australia's richest
women.
The program said she ran three
flourishing brothels, employing be
tween 25 and 45 women, and took 50
per cent of each prostitute's earnings.
Perth's brothels, though illegal, are
said to be tolerated by police provided
there are no under-age girls, no drugs
and no men involved in their manage
ment. Mr Whicker told British view
ers, "Containment frees prostitutes
from the parasitical pimp and pre
vents organised crime getting its
hands upon the flourishing brothels of
Perth and Kalgoorlie."
Mrs Flatman told Mr Whicker that
no new brothels could open and peo
ple who wanted to get into the busi
ness had to buy into an existing
establishment. Business had been
good in the old days before police
controls, but was now even better.
Western Australia's Police Com
missioner, Mr Brian Bull, quoted in
the program as saying that contain
ment was the "ideal system", told
Perth's Sunday Times that his com
ments did not conflict with Western
Australia's planned legalisation of
prostitution.
"I believe the current system is ide
al until something better can be
found," he said.
Mrs Flatman told the newspaper
that she was shocked to hear about
her reported statements on prostitu
tion, but declined to comment further
until she had seen the program.
She said she thought she had been
on a family TV show to promote the
bicentenary.
A spokesman for Western Austra
lia's Minister for Police, Mr Hill,
said Cabinet would make a decision in
the "near future" about legislation to
legalise prostitution.
Mr Hill has condemned the con
tainment system, saying it puts police
in the unfair position of having to
administer an illegal activity.
He wants a judge to head a new
authority administering legalised
prostitution. -
I really enjoyed this article. Thank you Historian 😊

The Scarlet Garter. Top of the range establishment conveniently located near Parliament House... A shared shower room downstairs where'd you make conversation with other punters wandering around in towels, but even that seemed classy. Absolutely amazing women. Just up from the Old Melbourne in Hay St. Popular with the US Fleet when they were in town, and with me when they weren't. Burnt down as others have mentioned...

La Cherie had a memorable meeting with a short tanned NZ woman in the spa and then she led me to the bedroom for more fun.

Yes, Bikini Girls used to hire desperate out of work fuckers to put out flyers for them. Unfortunately, what they did was illegal. They ever got me to work for them when I was at a low point. Unfortunately I got busted on my first shift. The rest is history.
