I'm off to Townsville on Christmas eve to spend Christmas/New Years with friends. Then off to Canberra on Jan 2nd to grab my car and drive it back up to Darwin! (I came up to Darwin from Langtrees Canberra rather quickly and didn't have time to drive my car up - I have definitely missed driving it). I am actually looking forward to the drive, thinking of going inland NSW/QLD via Mt Isa to Darwin. Has anyone done that drive recently?

oh wow what a trip. A gf just went from Townsville to Darwin now and on way to Perth. Just take easy when driving she said soooo many cars on side of road waiting for engines to cool. I would go the way that there are towns closer together with the heat coming. make sure your road service upto date too. Enjoy your holiday and trip keep us up to date with your travels. Merry Merry Christams 🎄

I did the original drive of Townsville to Canberra in October last year. Luckily my car is fairly new, but I am definitely traveling where I know there is lots of service stations about - just in case. My road side assist is also up to date :)

All i want for christmas is some cooler days and a bit of a break from work. Anything on top of that would be the icing on the cake

Kangaroos & other native animals will b the biggest danger on ur road trip.
Obviously driving at night is the biggest risk but the odd kamikaze kangaroo will still appear out of nowhere during daylight hours.
Believe it or not the little plastic kangaroo whistles that can b purchased 4 a few bucks at most auto parts stores work like magic. I have done many trips East & encountered tens of thousands of kangaroos cattle sheep goats camels emu & even horses in my travels & I was amazed how 99% of the beasts I encountered (particularly the kangaroos) either stopped in their tracks & watched me drive by or took off in the opposite direction as my vehicle approached.
From my own personal success with the kangaroo whistles I would not dream of travelling Bush without them.

Yes I have had success with them as well. I usually get in behind a road train if travelling at night as they dont stop for anything.

Very true in fact my mum died as a result hitting a roo when driving from Cairns to Adelaide to spend Christmas with us. She got a far as QLD & NSW boarder. Poor woman was trapped in the car for 45 minutes before anyone found her. She survived a month in hospital before passing away from massive heart attack. He body could not cope with the injuries. 3 open fractures of her femur the other leg was impaled on the brake. Only her beautiful face was not marked. The rest was either broken or black and blue with bruises. She has to be air lifted from the crash site.
He accident was 16th Dec and she passed 13th January. With the drought wildlife are in area's you would

I used to do the same. When I lived at Gladstone I did a lot of escort work in Port Augusta and would wait for a road train then sit behind him

Christmas is the worst time to lose a loved one as it brings mixed emotions every year.
