This battle was one of the worst of the whole war; on the first day alone – the 1st July 1916 – the British Army lost 60,000 men, of whom 20,000 were killed. The Thiepval Service of Remembrance in 2016. For the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme, 10,000 people are expected to attend this moving ceremony.
