Who told you about the "birds and the bees"?

Your parents, your mates, brother/sister or maybe at school?

Sex education should be taught at school. Well this is the view of the majority of people in a recent survey conducted in Victoria.

One of the many problems with this is that most teachers that are expected to provide sex education to students
have little or no experience teaching or observing sexuality education in action. AWKWARD..........

So where do you think kids should learn about the "birds and the bees"?

My parents sheltered me from all knowledge of it. I was lucky that when I was 11, my girl friend's mother talked to us both which gave me a good start to being safe and respecting women especially as there was no internet porn available back then. These days most young guys learn from watching porn which is a really bad idea.

I had mine at school from a teacher, one to one as the class was being stupid, more from embarrassment I think. But I wanted to learn even then. She was fantastic in that she was not embarrassed and took her time with diagrams and explanations. Nothing from my parents and my first experience was with my first partner who on reflection had more experience than I could have known about, but it was exciting being the first time.

The only time I ever got to see porn on VHS, it got to the porn part and the tape all jammed up, it seems someone else had been rewinding and pausing over that part a lot

Swapping floppy disks of porn pics with school mates in the early early days of the internet.

I know I'm probably the exception but I am really pleased there was no porn around when I was a kid and early teens, only naked or topless pinups in most of the regular newspapers which ironically would never happen now. I remember when I was about 12 walking into Coles and they used to sell really large wall posters and they had one on display hanging up on the entrance to one of the isles and it was a photo of Farah Fawcett topless - a beautiful and artistic pic and I remember everyone walking past and hardly batting an eye lid. Now it would make world news and cause their share price to drop. I'm glad I got to lean about sex with my girl friend but I'd have also liked some kind of video examples that were natural and not some horrible clinical emotionless rubbish that were put out at the time by males who had an extremely narrow view of it themselves and only focused on reproduction - like that was all sex was for

Yep I'd most certainly agree, yet society seems to do its utmost to keep young people - especially males in the dark about sex and especially relationships then we wonder why domestic violence is so high. What do they teach in schools about relationships? Nothing, in fact your encouraged not to even have a girl friend and focus on hours of high level maths and science etc. I might be wrong but the solution to reducing domestic violence and improving relationships and sex starts here not when you've finished Uni and are financially secure.

Methinks if kids are brought up with sex ed by their parents from an early age as a natural part of life and nothing to be ashamed of, something they can ask questions freely about if they're curious, there would be less unfortunate "accidents" out there...be it of the baby or STI variety.
I've occasionally wondered what our population would look like if suddenly every child born of an "accident" disappeared.
