Sun Tanning

It's such a big apparent No No.
I sun bake for 15 minutes a side, usually between 9.30am and 10.30am. I always feel re-energised and l like having a nice glow (Not Dark Though). I also believe the Vitamin D is good for me. It's also when I do a mental cleanse, ground myself and relax (I'm not so good with meditation in winter).

Am I doing the wrong thing?

Should I use self tan with all the chemicals?

Would the Melatonin injections be advisable?

Are there other options available?

How else could I get enough Vitamin D?

I think nature is best " In moderation".

Your thoughts Please.

I'm not a tanner. I enjoy the sun, but I usually lather sunscreen everyday and don't make catch the sun for the purpose of tanning... simply because I'm not very good at it. I burn. Hence the use of sunscreen :p

I've never been much into the idea of fake tan. It seems like an effort I don't have the patience to maintain.

I always was pale white then burnt, peeled and went back to white, before having kids, Now I actually tan quite well. Apparently for some women the melatonin levels change during/after pregnancy.
Like I mentioned I don't want to be dark, just a golden glow.
I'm a lover of sunscreen though. I don't generally like chemical " as such" on my skin but I believe not using it would be worse..

I'm outdoors a lot Tania, mostly running or surfing and I'm also very keen on looking after my health and skin so I take the issue of sun damage / health very seriously.

My view is this, some sun during low UV times is definitely healthy, so I limit all my outdoor time to before 10am and after maybe 4pm or later depending on the time of the year (summer it can be more like 5 or 6pm. I cover myself each time in sunscreen yet I have more than enough of a tan.

So my advice from experience is go for sun outside of the hours I mentioned and use sunscreen to keep out the UVB,

My doctor says that most people suffer from a vitamin D deficiency during winter and some even over summer. It is thought but not proven to be a link between low vitamin D and some auto immune diseases such as MS which shows an increased risk the further one is from the equator. So my doctor says get tested for Vit D at the end of winter and take Vit D suppliments until your levels come back up.

I would avoid tanning beds and if I've gone for a swim when it's 40c at 1pm etc, I cover myself in sunscreen and only swim for 10min max. I'm not saying I'm right, it's just been my experience over the years, and i think my skin looks ok for it's age.

I tan fairly easily But I have had most family members get the dreaded skin cancers So I became a member of the hat and long sleeve shirt brigade

Only to find I enjoy the long sleeved dress shirt look so it all worked out fine

So I have a peaches and and cream complexion With ruddy great hairs sproutin all over the place
