In the wake of Stuart O’Grady’s doping bombshell, Adelaide researchers say the majority of sporting cheats are slipping through the net. An Adelaide University study has found it is far too easy for athletes to beat the current testing regime, but bringing it up to speed would cost a fortune. Analysis of data from the World Anti-Doping Agency has found current screening for drug cheats across nearly a hundred sports is failing. Researchers say as many as two thirds of positive tests are slipping through.“It looks like the current system is not effective in detecting,” researcher Aaron Hermann said. “So realistically, there’s probably a larger number getting away with it.” Researchers said athletes aren’t tested often enough. Professor Maciej Henneberg said: “With careful planning, it is possible to avoid detection for a very long time.” They believe testing should occur weekly, but estimate that would cost $40,000 per year, per athlete. Meanwhile, the fallout from Stuart O’Grady’s bombshell intensified today. After admitting he took performance enhancing drugs before the 1998 Tour de France, the Olympic medallist’s membership of the athletes’ commission has been terminated. And it doesn’t end there. Legal experts say O’Grady’s admission exposes him to potentially costly retribution from sponsors trying to recoup their money. “They could also say, well you’ve had the benefit of our money all that time, we want interest,” lawyer Peter Campbell said. Disgraced cyclist Lance Armstrong has been facing similar woes. (He owes Millions)
Livestrong, the cancer charity he founded, is still struggling from significant falls in donations.

Mr HP it seems all these elite sportsmen are doped up to the eye balls.... And I really couldn't give 2 squirts of cats piss.

Punter Olympics would be of more interest to me.

I'm not surprised. They're people with money.
For those of you in the body building - be sure to watch bigger, stronger, faster. The tagline really matches well too.

Amen Col.

There is far too much hype and hysteria in this country about sport in general. Those guys pedalling around France, splashing up and down pools and kicking or whacking balls around various shaped grounds are not even doing anything particularly useful yet they get paid squillions and people fawn over them as if they are gods.

Meanwhile people doing worthwhile scientific research are struggling for funding.

The priorities are all screwed up

I don't really have a problem with sportspeople earning loads of money. They are the very very best at what they do. Millions upon millions of people play sports like Soccer & Golf, an unbelievably small percent of participants ever earn money from it. And of that do earn, a tiny percent earn 'crazy money'. Nobody ever took up a sport because it's an easy way of making cash. Because it's not.

Many hedge fund managers make billions(!) in one year. These guys are basically in the business of making rich people more money. Their value to society? Nill, I would say.

I agree with you BigMike And for many many people elite sport on the weekend whether watching AFL or the once strong Australian cricket team
It is a escape from their everyday Though enjoying watching my kids play for our local footy team was even more enjoyable

And as for the big money in so called amateur sport like swimming For every Ian Thorpe there are thousands of hopefuls who work extremely hard but are not as gifted or have the same work ethic or maybe its a one eyed aim to succeed So good luck to him and its because of the thousands who dont succeed that I dont agree with those that want AIS grants etc repayed Everyone with the talent and drive has the chance to recieve it so why worry I am sure Thorpe, Hackett have repayed that money with Jobs for others through their efforts in the sport Even if it is the nerd who is now his drug tester

I agree Happy. I wouldn't begrudge Ian Thorpe (not implying anyone is or has) anything that came his way. He had me and I'm sure many other jumping around the room in 2000. I'd bet he inspired plenty of kids to jump in the pool. That can only be a good thing.

Footballers in Europe were basically slaves, for a long time. They got a very slender piece of the pie... even though they're the ones that are putting on the show. They're the ones that can have their short careers ended in an instant. The high wages are a relatively new thing in the history of the sport.
With so much money flowing into the sport, it's better a bigger chunk of the money goes to the guys on the pitch, rather than the guys in the suits.

Not me.... Not long after everyone's favourite metrosexual Thorpie had his own T.V show Undercover Angels which was crapola personified... Vomit inducement for the masses.

I don't mind when sports people get paid good money as they most likely need it for their life after their used-by date......talking the top dollars.....well, most of them secure some kind of advertising contract which will keep them more than comfortable. So let's be sensible about sport and money.
I do like to follow certain sports and I do mind the trend of performance enhancing drugs. For me one attraction about sports (gymnastics, cycling, sprinting, running etc) has always been the achievements of the human body. Fat chance.........you can't tell anymore if it is work and effort or drugs.

Athletes taking performance enhancing drugs? Who'd have thought! Next they'll say all the AFL players are in on it.

It all depends what they define as performance enhancing drugs, the blue pill is definitely one. You wouldn't give it to athletes who are just about to compete. It will be a poking accident waiting to happen.

Fun fact. Four of the eight sprinters that lined up in the London 2012 100m final have been banned for drugs in their careers - Blake, Gatlin, Gay, Powell. In that race they finished 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 8th respectively.
