Anyone familiar with Second Life? Have you played it or known someone who has? It's basically a virtual world, where real people create ávatars of themselves and interact with other people in the virtual community. Besides forming real relationships with other people who could be on the other side of the world (most who are not even anything like the representation of the avatars they have created) there is also 'real businesses'created, whereby through the exchange of real money you can by the Second Life money to purchase goods/services for your avatars such as houses, clothing, etc.

I was browsing through online documentaries and came across one called Life 2.0, which dealt with the subject of Second Life, and how this virtual world/game collides with their real life. It focuses on three different aspects of how Second Life:

1. How to married people meet in this virtual world and role playing their characters, divorce their partners and eventually meet in the real world. You find that the real world is very different to the virtual world.
2. How a a guy creates an avatar of a girl to overcome past issues and to find himself.
3. How a lady try's to maintain her 'business' in Second life, in selling houses, and clothing, while overcoming real life scenarios like 'theft' in the real world.

In general I believe chat rooms and virtual games can take away your real life.
Like all things they can be fun as long a little self control is used.

There was a time I use to spend 8 hours a day at a particular chat room.
I knew a guy who pulled the chord out of his wife's computer because she spent most of her time on it.

I have a friend in USA... she has MS and is unable to leave the house very often
She however runs a very successful shoe store in SL and also makes items for others on demand
She made a whole school once on commission from a university in New Orleans so the students could log in and run virtual classes with teachers without having to actually attend the school

People do make real money there .... such as my friend who supports her RL with the money she takes from SL

I know alot of people who have met people in game and gone on to meet and form relationships RL
I've travelled to USA and met alot of people this way
I even went to the wedding of 2 friends in Canada in 2009 that met in game... the same place I met them.

I've been a player there since 2007

Second life carries all those usual web risks, who are you talking too? It's a fantasy world after all. This one takes real money too, sounds more like Second Wife!

Yea, I have logged into SL a bit over the years.
Found it a bit mundane with too many shops and advertising in much of it.
But there are some very interesting creative places in it and sometimes some cool music being enjoyed by like-minded people.
Haven't had a look for a while, will do again sometime.
