"Sparks from a short-circuiting cricket system, however, were detectable throughout 1975–76. Mulcahy had caught Lillee at a tender time in October 1975: Lillee had been retrenched by Travel Time and was only kept in Perth by a friendly car-dealer, Rod Slater, who found him work selling Renaults and Peugeots."

Rod Slater was my next-door neighbor and close friend; he will always be remembered with affection. He did many amazing things in his lifetime; one was saving the Perth Speedway when they got kicked out of the Claremont Showgrounds.

If you wanted to know anything about cars (he was an European-make fan but didn't steamroll Japanese ones as being "Jap Crap" either) he was the man.

If you wanted to know about life, he was the knowledgeable fan about most of it too.

Isn't that an amazingly quiet claim to fame though? Giving a young, unknown potential sports star one of his first jobs!!
