I keep getting this message.

A secure connection cannot be established because this site uses an unsupported protocol.

Im on a very old phone though so may need something newer

Do cookies and java both need to be activated?

Yes, java and cookies are in use.
You might get a bit frustrated with them disabled.

Oh and yes. Older browsers will not understand the latest secure SSL protocols.
Maybe you can try installing a newer/secondary browser maybe.
