I have just spent two days in Varanasi https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Varanasi also known as Benaras. It is 700 kilometers from Kolkata and one hour flying time, but add two hours for airport check in and luggage etc.
We left on Wednesday night. Booked a hotel thru bookings.com and scored a lovely old palace converted to a hotel.Hotel Surya. I will add photos a little later from my mobile. Hotel was really nice very romantic, the room was extra large and spacious with a nice balcony.
Varansi is one of the oldest cities in India, and one of the oldest in the world.

Japanese Temple in Sarnath.jpeg
On Thursday morning, I went on the Buddha tour. There are many monuments to Buddha in varansi as he lived in this area for many years and dies in Varanasi.. They were beautifully kept, and I found the experience rather sacred. At the first temple I bought a little Buddha for Jacqui to add to her 400 odd collection. This will be the first from his own temple.

At the end of the tour they took me to a silk workshop, where I saw silk weaving in the traditional style. The art centre was run by the temple association for the upkeep of all the Buddha temples.
After enjoying the weaving we went into the silk shop and I was enthralled. I do love the way they sit you and make you comfortable, and then pull down all the table, runners, bed covers, tablecloths, and silk scarfs. I had a lovely hour and yes succumbed and bought a few pieces. They will be great memories of my two days in Varanasi. Sorry folks the video of the weaving did not work out.

Thursday Night and we went to one of the ceremonies that they hold on the Ganges River.

I found the ceremony very meaningful, yes I touched the water of Ganges and said a prayer. I would recommend this experience to all.
Aftr the ceremony we had a lovely thin crust pizza and apple pie, in a delightful setting overlooking the Ganges.

Friday, what can a girl do but a bit of shopping. The first stop was a famous sweet shop. The sweets in India are delightful, not as sugary as ours, and from what I have been told about 60% plant base.
I am pleased I don;t live near this sweet shop as I would be back every day.

Then little Sari shopping, coffee at the mall, where I bought a lovely India dress, with pants. They altered it more me within an hour.
I could spend a week in Varanasi, discovering all the little lane ways, walking around the cows that live with the city people and seem to cause no problems. The noise of the city reminded me of New York with the honking of the traffic horns blaring loudly. They use the horn as a courtesy to let another driver know they are close. The traffic works very well for a city of its size.
