Medication and its effects on sex

P

Perth boy

Don’t know if anyone has had this happen.

A month ago I was put on a low dosage of anti depression medication because I was thinking a bit too much and getting obsessive . I know a few people on this medication for long term and never thought I would need them but they worked I don’t think so much.

The down side or upside depending on how you look at it is now it takes me a long time to cum. A really long time. Last night the wife had to get me to stop and I was no ware ready to finish. We were in a foursome at the time so I moved to the other girl as her partner had finished a long time before. She also was worn out and I was stuffed. Still no finish for me.
Its like you get to the point of your just about to cum then the feeling goes away, it comes back a few minutes later and then away again. This goes on for ages. I am normally a two or three minute guy so I have been having a ball and a lot of fun but as time goes by its starting to take even longer and not really that good when you have great sex and dont finish.

Today I decided to stop the pills.

Anyone have this type of thing happen from medication??

They usually tell u the side effects prior to taking the medication. I guess medication effects ppl differently. However, is it only making it harder to come or erection issues too?if you lasting longer and have no prob keepin it up, who needs viagra? This way u kill two birds with one stone last longer/help depression. Btw u shouldnt suddenly stop medicatio. Raise issues with yr dr

Erection not a problem at all but as the days go by its taking longer and longer to cum. Last night was the 1st time I couldnt cum EVER. Going to see doc tomorrow. I was only put on them for 4 weeks and am two days short of finishing anyway.

Its been fun but dont want to continue.

Hi mate,

Yes, I was on antidperessants for a couple of years, and they did tell me about the side-effects. I've always had problems with cumming, so I didn't notice any difference. The ones I was on (Citalopram) actually sort of reduced the sex drive overall. But then, when you're stressed, you wouldn't feel like it anyway.

But yes, those meds will affect you. Just be careful you don't stop taking them when you're still in a somewhat fragile state of mind. When my situation improved (losing my job in my 40s with no prospects of a new one brought it on for me), I slowly reduced the dosage over a period of six weeks until I felt okay to stop taking them altogether, and my GP recommended doing it that way. Certainly DON'T go cold turkey, small things might set you off.

It would also help to ask the doctor what is in the pills, i have taken a few different types of anti-depression medication but have usually thrown them away after a few days as most gave me nightmares.
They say they take usually around 2 weeks to start to work, so it's a little strange he only put you on them for a month.
The only ones i did use for awhile were Advanza as they had something in them that helped you sleep, which they did with no nightmares.

There always bringing out some new anti-depression drug, for me none ever worked for depression anyhow, the only one i stayed on for awhile were the advanza and that was only a couple of months.
I have never heard of an antidepressant that you only take for a month.
Also i find a lot of medication affect people differently. At least you said they worked for you, be interesting to see how you feel after you stop taking them.
That is also a problem they never really tell you about the side affects until you find out yourself.

All my medications come with a pamphlet inside with about a hundred side-effects listed (in very small print). Generally, range from mild nausea, through blindness to death (in other words an arse-covering exercise). I would be very surprised if yours didn't as well. Plus my pharmacist always asks if I have had a particular medication before and if not, will tell me what the main side-effects will be. Could be interesting when you pick up a script for Levitra from the female pharmacist in a crowded shop!!

All SSRI antidepressants I have tried have had the same, frustrating side effect. Avanza is the only one that I have found to help my mild depression without any side effects at all, I am even very lucky in that it doesn't cause weight gain (common side effect of avanza).

Didnt realy say to much more however I knew most of the side affects from other people I know. I had the pamphlet but didnt read it as I know its the normal ass covering stuff and the writting is to fine I carnt see it.

Stopped using them yesterday no side affect yet.

Glad they left no long term side affects. Yeah that's what i meant as well i usually rely on my doctor telling me any side affects. The pamphlets in the boxes are that small i have no chance of reading it either.

Had the same thing when i was on a few years ago. Im a two minute man too and it got ridiculous the amount of time it took - went from having a frustrated partner to a... frustrated partner. For other reasons i ended up coming off my meds.

They do prescribe some antidepressants as premature ejaculation meds nowadays. Fluoxetine (Prozac) and Dapoxetine (Priligy) for example. They way you counter the potential for these meds to kill your erection is by also taking an ED med like Sildenafil or Tadalafil.

Perthboy, have you considered addressing the issues which have driven you to take antidepressants in the first place? Medications can be fine for short term periods, particularly if there is an imbalance in brain chemistry. But they really are a band aid cure.
Address the core of the issues.

On a side note; Lucky man to have a wife so liberal as to be engaging in a foursome.

I agree with you for the most part here. To my knowledge all prescription medications that go in to our bodies have potential side affects and most honest medical professionals I have seen admit there is a lack of understanding as to how many med's actually work....they just do...leads me to believe that if there is a natural alternative (eg exercise, diet, counselling etc) these should be explored first from a health and safety point of view. The other benefit from non-medical options is, as you have mentioned, if they work, in many cases the actual problem can be solved (not just a band aid solution). Bloody exercise, no way around that is there hehe:) I do believe however that there are genuine cases where the issue (depression for example) is soley due to some brain chemical imbalance which can only be rectified with medication. Subsequently there are many many people who, having exhausted all other avenues, accept that they may need to take the medication for the rest of their lives in the same way diabetics who need insulin,,,need insulin. Similarly in these cases there is evidence suggesting genetics can play a role. ---'insert disclaimer...I am fully untrained in this area just my own thoughts though personal experiences and self interest have I formed my opinion '' blah blah lol:)

You are right Alex. The "gold standard" treatment for depression is Counselling AND antidepressants.

Unfortunately, our beleaguered public health system cannot cope with the increasing demand for mental health services so patients can wait several months to see a counsellor/psychologist (unless you have private health insurance.) In the meantime, antidepressants are the main treatment and yes, allof them have side effects, the most common being weight gain, loss of libido and sexual dysfunction. Newer types with fewer adverse effects are continually being developed so it's worth trying others to find what suits but only under the guidance of a doctor.

Perth Boy, lack of orgasm (anorgasmia) is a commonly reported side effect of antidepressants particularly with SSRI types, so again talk to your doctor to try others. Anorgasmia could also have a psychological cause especially in a context of repeated failures when overwhelming anxiety takes over.

Also my friends remember "post coitum omnes animales triestes sunt."

Hi Perth boy

I had this probem when taking the antipresents Lovan and Effexor (not at the same time) Anorgasmia the call it. i did some reaserch when on Effexor and found that the addition of a small dose of buspirone enabled me to orgasm.

I am now taking Pristiq and do not have this problem (tested recently ;D ) also did not have the problem when taking Cymbalta.

Good luck as it sucks to be depressed then even sucks more when you find out that you can't orgasm. Remember antidepressants effect people differently. Sometimes it seems more like an art or just good luck finding the right one rather than science.

Recent reports (Norden, 1994; Seagraves et al, 1996) suggests that
adding buspirone, a partial agonist of the 5-HT1A autoreceptor, may
have a beneficial effect of decreasing or reversing sexual
dysfunctions induced by SSRIs

I didn't know I had depression (for years). I did find naughty sex lifted my moods for quite a while, BDSM most of all. It also played to my natural subbie predisposition.

I later found that the Russians had or do use spanking as a depression cure. I wonder if we can get it on the PBS or Medicare?

Lol i was just about to post to and saw the date

You did post :)

Probably a useful thread to necro as it has valid information in it.
My experience of three SSRIs has been the same. Severly depressed libido, 'lazy lobs' rather than full stiffy and difficulty/delayed/non-event orgasms. The last one was Cymbalta and that was probably the worst, plus had a number of other side effects when taking it and after coming off it.

An alternative that didn't have the sexual effects for me was Valdoxan (Agomelatine), however last time I checked it wasn't available as a government subsidised prescription (private medical may cover half the cost).

One of the best tools to assist in reducing depression is having something to look forward to e.g. a holiday or similar pleasurable activity. I'm currently off meds and looking forward to catching up with my mia noi in Thailand.

I was on Lexapro for two or three years. Certainly had a "calming" effect after the first few weeks. Initially the impact seemed to significantly raise my anxiety and I really was concerned for two weeks or so. As the body got used to them I would say the effect on me was "mellowing". Sex drive was somewhat lessened and certainly the time taken to orgasm increased substantially.

Four weeks is too short a period for noticeable effects. Commonly this type of med is prescribed for months or even years (as Bill states above). The numbing/calming varies, but most recently in my case the numbing was to the point of forgetting names and a general vagueness. The chemical castration was bad enough, but the memory issues were the main trigger to me to get off them. Cialis etc., fixed the ED, but not the orgasm problems.

** As a working lady presently in Darwin but bases myself out of Perth...medication for depression does affect someone's ability to perform. However if you are so intent on thinking about cuming; then the chances are you are not going to be able to. What you need to do is be relaxed when being intimate - don't focus on the end goal but enjoy the moment and the physical act. Enjoy having fun. There is more to pleasure than being able to cum.

This is great advice, and for punters more broadly I think. I have trouble with new girls I meet, and its something thats getting worse as I age. Its got to be nervousness or something, though I am not by nature a nervous guy and I don't really feel anxious or nervous meeting new girls .. but its got to be related.

Its one of the big reasons why I like to find a few ladies and stick with the ones I really like - the 'problem' subsides ... though never goes away.

But your advice is really spot on - just enjoy. I have even just recently had a fantastic time with a couple of new girls where I've been unable to cum but still walked away with a spring in my step and a general feeling that all is well in the world.
