If you speak more than one language, how and why did that come about?

What were/are the most effective tools that made learning another language doable?

What tips do you have?

What languages do you think are the easiest to learn?

I'd love to learn woman speak
I have been on this planet 52 yrs I just start to think I am getting somewhere and Bam Right back to square one

Ahoy here another way to look at your question Tania.
How about if you where raised and English was not your first language?

But, you live in a country, go to a new school, where everyone speaks English.
It takes you all your life to get rid of your First language, but, guess what, you cannot forget it.
Its there, with-in your head.
Cheers and Pass the Rum

I am currently learning sign language because my daughter is deaf.. sign language is hard because the slightest hand movement done in the wrong way can mean something totally different to what you mean lol

Try surronding yourself as much as you can with the people that speak the language you are trying to learn.

What is it you would love being able to speak?

There was a time that I wanted to learn Mandarin and Hokkien. I did start self teaching through books how to read Mandarin, but I Didn't continue. My husband has lost his 1st language since being in Australia for many years and not practising and using the language regularly enough.

I downloaded an app last year that I toy with on and off and have been self teaching French...

Given the seemingly incurable yellow fever I suffer, I would love to speak every Asian language!
Which of the Asian languages is easier to learn?

You had better not go to Africa Spicey Many countries won't let you back in if you haven't had your yellow fever vaccinations

I learned enough Thai to get my face slapped and find a toilet a couple of years ago but, like most Asian languages, the tonal aspect is very difficult for a Westerner.

The other snag was that if I opened up a conversation with a native speaker and they replied in full-throttle idiomatic Thai I found it impossible to keep up.

They are a fun people though so most encounters were at least entertaining.

The easiest Asian language to learn is Indonesian its also really similar to Malaysian . Many words have a obvious connection to English

I heard if you put yourself in a "sink or swim" environment, you will pick it up much quicker.

Not the easiest way to learn but I have been there.

Definitely I have spent the last six years in Asia and it really helps if you cant speak the language , baik Baik saja
