Ladakh is most famous for breathtaking landscapes, the crystal clear skies, the highest mountain passes, thrilling adventure activities, Buddhist Monasteries and festivals. The best time to visit Ladakh is in Summer (April - June) when the climate here is pleasant, with the snow from winter all thawed. During the rest of the year, Manali-Leh highway is not functional and the only operational way is the Srinagar-Leh highway which also gets affected by occasional landslides.

Ladakh ("land of high passes") is a region in northern India presently a part of the State of Jammu and Kashmir and soon to an Union territory from 31st October,2019 as per the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act 2019. It is located between the Kunlun mountain range in the north and the main Himalayas to the south.

Check the link below if you are planning to visit India.

Food in Ladakh - Local Dishes and Drinks

Momos

Momos are steam-cooked in a mokto, a multi-compartment vessel with holes in the sides that is stacked on top of one another. In the bottom-most container, water is brought to a boil, then momos are prepared using the steam. Particularly circular pleated and half-moon forms are two of these dumplings' lovely shapes.

Thukpa

The main dietary staple of the Ladakhi people is thukpa. It is a soupy noodle meal that contains minced meat for non-vegetarians and a variety of veggies for vegetarians. The wheat or barley flour is used to make the noodles.

Skyu

Skyu, a traditional soup-based specialty, is another exquisite Ladakh food. In this recipe, dough and vegetables are combined to form balls around the size of your thumb. After being smashed, these balls are placed in a saucepan with water and veggies, where they are simmered for a short while.

Chhutagi

Chhu means "water" and tagi means "bread" in Ladakhi, so chhutagi literally translates as "water bread." One unusual and nutrient-rich Ladakhi delicacy is chhutagi. Typically, circular shapes are cut out of the flattened dough before it is shaped into a bowtie.

Tingmo

Tibetan bun-shaped bread is cooked and eaten with dal, meat, and veggies. Without any filling, tingmo is a delicate, soft, and fluffy bun made from wheat flour. It is typically eaten with meat and is best served hot. It is a common dish served for breakfast, lunch, and dinner in Ladakh.

Chhurpe

Ladakh cuisine uses the flavorful ingredient chhurpe, which is derived from the milk of dzomos, a breed of domestic cattle and yak. In winter, when vegetables or meat are scarce, this white ingredient is added to thukpa to enhance flavor.

Butter tea

People in Ladakh consume it continuously because it keeps them warm and hydrated in the region's chilly, high-altitude climate. Gur-gur chai tea is made by combining boiled tea leaves with butter, milk, and salt before being well churned.

Chhang

Local beer from Ladakh, called chhang, is offered to guests as a customary beverage. Chhang, which has an alcoholic content ranging from 5% to 7%, is made by fermenting barley. Chhang is consumed at key events like weddings, festivals, and other celebrations. A pot of chhang is presented to the girl's family when a marriage proposal is made. 1691039756817.png
