Has anyone on here ever experienced dialysis? Kidney disease or renal failure? My partner is doing dialysis from home and as her full time carer I want to know if there is anyone else on here going through anything similar. I also wonder where to start seeking a possible donor...

Be grateful that the dialysis is done from home. It takes so much more out of people when they have to travel 3 times a week for it and that boring waiting around process. Much more comfortable being at home with familiar surroundings.

Hi Dakota...yea i got the disease had it for 18mths now 3days x 4 hrs a session per week for a donor reckon best bet is ask ur doctor.....actually i reckon theres some REALLY GREAT PEOPLE in this forum who would gladly bend over backwards to donate a kidney.....i mean to say u only need 1 .......CUM ON GUYS DONATE;)

^^ You kidding, right?
Donating a kidney is not like donating blood. Body cant make another new kidney like blood cells even though people live with 1 kidney. There has to be tissue typing/matching between donor and recipient and donors kidneys found to be healthy. Not only that but intense counselling to prepare both mentally for the event just to mention some of the complex processes involved.

To ask random strangers on a forum to donate their kidneys is not only laughable but shows a serious lack of knowledge on the subject.

Firstly, well done on looking after your partner. It takes alot of effort and commitment.
In the first instance, you should talk to your partner's kidney specialist regarding transplantation.

Outcomes in terms donors in order of best to not so good outcome are;
Identical twins>> Live related donor (blood relative)>> Unrelated live donor >>> deceased donor. If your partner has an identical twin, the outcome would be excellent. Next best is a blood relative then unrelated living donor followed by unrelated dead donors. Tissue rejection leading to graft dysfunction is the main cause of transplant failure.

Ideally every person with end stage kidney failure should get a transplant and avoid dialysis altogether but the organ wait list is too long. Also other factors may make it hard for him to get a new kidney... including old age, other significant health problems, cancers, uncontrolled infections etc.

Again, talk to your partner's kidney specialist. If they thought he was a candidate for transplant, they would have told him by now. Best of luck

Sorry Bepp. I'm sure you already know that. Just clarifying it for folks here who know little or nothing about the complex process involved in work up for a kidney transplant and preparing them for life after transplantation.

My partner is on the transplant list,. Ive made kidney safe recipe book. I was just wondering if there was anybody on this forum with any similar experience. I do keep in regular contact with my partners nurses and specialists. Ive noticed that apart from one group on facebook and the nurses, there is not much other support out there. my partners waiting on her second transplant now.
 
Asked doc today bout transplant cause of age n ohter diseases dont have mych chance of getting one so its needles gor me 3×week forever
 
It is a very complex process and I know people who have donated a Kidney, who have received a kidney and one who died because a donor could not be found.
I think "putting it out there" is a good thing because there are just not enough donors available and one cant donate a kidney without going through a very vigorous process so even if they don't know much in the beginning they will have all the info and counselling made available to them so they can make an informed decision.
I think its great Dakota that you are caring for your partner and trying everything you can to find a donor, I wish you all the luck in the world and hope that a suitable donor can be found so that you can both enjoy your lives together without the constant medical roundabout that you find yourselves in.

Hi Dakota...may i ask how old is your partner..n wat kinda dialysus does she do hemo or peritoneal??

Hi, Thank you so much - it's all so very complex because unfortunately dialysis comes along with a whole range of different issues e.g my partner also has osteoporosis, restless leg syndrome. she cant eat much potassium or drink any fluid. Plus there's so much more i cant even think of at the moment. Doing the machine at home is good because its more comfortable then a hospital, but at times it can be very confronting and exhausting. I feel like i cant do enough, shes often tired, sick with nausea and vomiting or weak. A positive though is that I'm learning a lot about these types of diseases, i learned the machine and i hope to use these skills to one day work with other dialysis patients. I also found a page on Facebook for dialysis patients and she is starting to connect with them which is making her feel more positive about receiving another kidney.

Your so correct about how difficult it can be, on her birthday this year she is going to be stuck in surgery having an operation on her fistula. May i ask in more detail why the person you knew passed? My partner is 32, she has had Final Stage Renal Failure since she was 17. She has had one Transplant which lasted 5 years approx before failing and had to be removed. It was removed 3 years ago and she is still waiting. If i matched i would happily give her mine, as i see how hard it is to live on dialysis. Thank you for your supportive comment xx
