Government: Health Vs New Fighter Jets?

Okay, well the Government is going on about how much debt the country is in, and trying to cushion us for the tough Federal Budget to be delivered next month.

So to save money and reduce the debt, the Government is targeting pensions (raise the age from 67 to 70 and reviewing disability pensions) and introducing introducing co payments to bulk bill GP visits. However, they can afford to spend 12 Billion on 58 new Fighter jets? Really? Go figure.....

To me, it's like I'm in credit card debt but instead of saving money and spending on paying bills I'll just go buy myself a new porshe .....

I know right?.... you would think the goverment leader was a woman - oops wait
he is totally surrounded by women....:facepalm::facepalm:

sounds like someone is having a midlife crises .

just wait for the pay increase for the politicians

I know it's hard to accept that buying fighters when money can be put on other things. There is a big BUT to all of it, we must replace ageing F-18 Hornets. I'm not happy with the aircraft we are buying as they are very unproven.

Australia is a resource rich continent that many countries would love to walk in, so defence needs are a necessary buy. The last 25 years all of our Governments Federal and State have squandered so much of our taxes including selling the Australian peoples assets.
We are spending more on the fuckin NBN that most will never see. Just my 2 cents worth ;)

Yep, this old furphy (spend it on health??) crops up every time the Government spend money on anything big, especially defence related hardware.

The fact is that health is a black hole which is quite capable of sucking up our entire G.D.P. if allowed free reign. If money is to be saved anywhere I would take the hatchet, no, make that a chainsaw, to the bureaucrats in charge of health. They and the Education Department are the biggest leeches in our economy and if empire building was an Olympic sport they would be gold medallists.

Get rid of about half the paper-shufflers in those two departments and we could afford a hundred new fighters.

I agree with Harry and sven on this Health is a vitally important But spending has to be targeted spending Money at the coal face not in the ivory towers
And defence is also a vital expenditure I may well be wrong But I am sure many past governments have thought If we have any trouble New Zealand will save us or maybe the US

Not to mention that the money is not being taken from elsewhere. It has been saved by multiple governments over quite a few years specifically for defence spending.

if the gov has saved the money for the defense program , then that is great but then why are they cutting costs in all other areas including health , dsp , pensions and many more . i bet the gov doesn't take a pay cut to help our broken finances . :-) :-)

just like Campbell Newman our beloved premier , states QLD is broke but he did not hesitate to ask for a 33% payrise this year but had to settle for 21% a $80,000.00 increase .

yeppers go figure

I'm all for new toys and these look great but i don't understand why the money isn't being spent on drones. That's really the future of air warfare.

Australia just isn't a defence based economy like the US

Drones can replace spy planes and some strike bombers, but you can't replace a fighter pilots instincts. Remember these aren't top pilots flying drones.

On another note there are two major tax fund holes more than aged pension and that is Indigenous Australians and people smuggling cost billions.
Now also consider that some of these "Native Title" claims pay handsome royalties! Why not spread the wealth to all Indigenous tribes equally. Oh can't offend the Aboriginals

Silly thing about the payments of Native title It is only to the direct families If there are 200 of them say but a 1000 living on that land Its only payable to the 200 the rest will still rely on the largesse of others Even though they have lived together on that land for say the last100yrs

" Native Tital " is about the owners of the parcel of land which has been determinated years ago in the courts , if the money is earned on this land then the owners get paid not the tenants.

Agreed, however future stealth drones and missile advancements will see planes unable to take off... in wartime drones will destroy all air defence bases

i thought i would share this with you all :) these wages are per year for the rest of their life not untill they retire

wages.PNG

I get the gist of your table of wages JL: But it is a little outdated the annual age pension is $21 912.80
Sorry to be pedantic

No wonder with those continued earnings after they retire they are willing to backstab and tell lies in order to become Prime Minister even if it is only for one term.

But to be fair, that is nothing compared to what CEO's of large corporations can earn.

And of course those who are their underlings Like head of the health or finance dept get more than their minister
Remember the HooHah when Dr Fong became health head honcho he was earning treble or more than the Premier

As a nation, if we aren't willing to spend 2c in the dollar of our nations income, we don't deserve to keep it. Support our military by giving them the best of whatever they need, after all, there isn't many of them. If necessary, take it from foreign aid.

I don't think it's Health vs Fighter Jets;
We need both

I thought a comment by a senior Government member quoted in the 'West said it very well:

"Sorry lefties, we are buying these fighter aircraft because dream catchers, unicorns and organic soy won't defend this country."

Though I am supposed to stay away from political threads I must say something here.
Firstly the contract to buy these planes was done under the previous government.
Secondly the ADF has it's own budget.
Thirdly a country without good defense is not safe.

Seems opposing parties are turning this into something nasty when it's not.

I heard a few callers on the radio They had the opinion We have treaties and we will be looked after via those I think they forget we would be expected to take reasonable steps to defend ourselves It is not the responsibility of other nations to defend a nation that won't Which is different to helping a country that cant
