It's not explained very well. You're supposed to post once, and reply to other newbies 4 times (now changed to 1 time).

The idea being that you get involved in the community and help the new people feel welcome.
...but, again, it's not explained well, so most people spam the introductions - you're not the only one

this explains things somewhat, should probably be made a little more clear in the admins stickied post at the top of the welcome page.
