Wow - I have to admit this brings the blood up close to the boiling point.
I've been discriminated throughout the majority of my life being from America and being African-American.. so let get that out in the open first.
second, when ever I hear of folks discriminating, I often wonder if they can feel the pain that racist remarks or racism creates.. trust me when I tell you it's quite painful. I treat everyone regardless of race, creed or colour the same as I was brought up to not see colour, or religion as a barrier. I find that as a business person most people are quite nice and those that have had a problem in the past soon find out that it was the individual not the entire race that they have an issue with.
I mean if I read an advertisement that stated no this or that, it would really put me off.
I remember when I applied for a job at a movie studio in Hollywood over the phone interview went fantastic (3 interviews) then I was offer the opportunity to come to the studio to look around and discuss the salary. When I got there I was handed a yellow employment form (I knew what that meant) and when the person came out to meet me the first thing that came out of his mouth was "oh so sorry the job position was filled", I then went outside and called my friend and asked him to apply for the job he did and my lawyer and I had a field day... let's say a 6 digit field day.. see in the states it is prohibited to discriminate.. the law is if you offer a service or have a business it is open to all unless it's a religious issue and that has to be proven in court.
To hear that a W/L would discriminate is shocking but as someone stated it's her body and she can see who she likes, I would prefer if it's not written. Just do it tactfully and in person...
Sometimes I wish those that discriminate can walk in the shoes of those that are discriminated against to get a good look and feel of its full effect.
Thank god for those with common sense...
/rant off

It's not a normal service scenario and can't be compared to anything else out there on the street in my opinion.
There is a woman advertising in Melbourne for Asian/Indian clientele only. That's what's she's comfortable with, so be it, it's not like she's serving them food, or washing their car, she's going to be naked and having sex with them.

Wow!! JLMiller has raised an interesting and thought-provoking point.

How would it feel to have yourself disqualified from something, make that anything by virtue of your race, religious persuasion or for whatever other reason? And what if that happened to you regularly?

A lot of racism stems from mistrust of the unknown and is probably more prevalent among people who have had limited or no contact with other races. In the small country town where I grew up I can remember the casual use of "Dings" and "Dagoes" to describe the Italian immigrants and copped a fair bit myself over my "funny" (pommie) accent.

These days, In Perth at least, we have been regularly exposed to all races - Europeans, Vietnamese and, more recently, Africans so I hope that most of the barriers have been demolished. Certainly, the Italians and Germans did us a major favour by establishing our wine industry and they and the various Asiatic immigrants have pushed the dining options beyond the traditional "meat and two vegies" offerings.

Getting back to the point of this thread, though, I can well understand that a working lady needs a fair bit of lattitude in choosing her clients and should not be forced to accept all comers. Perhaps the answer is to find a more tactfulr way of refusing some punters than printing "I won't see (insert race of choice) in her ads.

Hey mate - I really feel your pain - but the issue here is far more complex than one of simple discrimination.

If we were all homogeneous in our cultural views and sensitivities then colour would not mean a thing - truly.

I think the real issue here arises from the fact that in good old Perth, the most isolated city in the world, we have grown up with a feeling that most people, irrespective of their colour, creed or religion have the same general values and standards.

However, in recent years there has been a substantial influx of people of from other cultures from third world environments who have avoided the normal migrant selection processes. Many of them have vastly different views on how for example to treat a woman. Without picking on any one race, many people of the type I refer to are happy to take the pleasures a working lady can provide but then treat those service providers with disdain and contempt.

"No" by a W/L to a request does not mean "no" to the punter. in their cultures violence is often resorted to in such cases without hesitation. I have seen the results of this with my own eyes. There is also a lack of care towards hygiene and/or responsibility regarding transmission of sti's etc

Put simply, Perth has grown by half a million people over the last decade and with it much of its innocence has evaporated.

A lot of good advice has been given by members of this site as to to the way the issue could and should be handled tactfully and I think that it is really helpful to those at risk to be able to consider the different views under debate.

Discrimination at any level is evil but so are all the negative things I have alluded to above.

@ jlmiller - I understand your hatred towards racism and I am sorry you have had to experience it as much as you have during your life, especially the job interview as you stated, that it pretty disgusting.

However I do believe that it's pretty obvious that a working lady is offering a service that is quite different and unique from any other profession...

When we are talking about intimate contact with a person's body, that person is completely and solely in charge of who has access to it, period, and if a working lady has a preference of ethnicity then that should be respected, she has no obligation (unlike other professions) to be open as to which race she accepts.

If she advertises her preferences publicly, then sure some people may be offended, but honestly, if you are reading advertisements for adult services, I highly doubt you are easily offended anyway...

As for racism as a whole, sadly it will always exist, it will never be stamped out, not in a million years. But as far as equal opportunity goes, in Australia at least, there is definately no problem these days, compared to the past.

I know you are African-American, but I will use aboriginals as an example in Australia, I would argue that it is easier to find employment, to gain an advanced education and to be successful as an aboriginal citizen than it is being any other race in Australia, for the simple reasons that:

* Aboriginals receive free education.
* Aboriginals receive free medical treatment.
* Large businesses actually have government incentive measures in place to hire aboriginal workers.

Really, at least from my experiences, it would be easier to have a business career in Australia as an aboriginal, than being caucasian.

You forgot to mention that being a racist is accepted if your an aboriginal.

And people wonder why racism will never die in Australia but I think "colour" is almost irrelevant to the multicultural residents of Australia now!
