I'm not sure about everyone else but I love Burlesque. The clothes, the dancing, the music and the atmosphere. It's awesome. And it seems Sydney Sider's think so too. There is quite an active Burlesque scene with fine dining, great shows and Even an Art Class.
Burlesque comes in and out of fashion in Sydney: sometimes it seems that every event or show has a winking lass in feathers coquettishly disrobing, other times it retreats into the cabaret scene for a few years, biding its time. However, it never completely goes away, thanks to those who keep the sexy, sassy faith.
SLIDE
Located in the heart of Sydney’s entertainment precinct, Slide is truly one of Sydney’s best-kept secrets. Housed inside elegant surrounds, Slide boasts first class French cuisine, a lively cocktail list and an electrifying calendar of entertainment. Slide transforms into a gorgeous set depending on which day of the week you wander in on.
Cabaret venue Slide turns up the heat with a regular rotation of sexy neo-burlesque productions that slink and swing between aerial routines, erotic shadow projection and downright saucy striptease. Their roster of shows include Parisian-themed Risqué Revue, boylesque night Voyeur plus cabaret, contortion and trapeze in El’ Circo.
THE VANGUARD
The trusty Vanguard is an intimate live music venue and restaurant that has long played host to the greats of Australian and international music. Almost vaudeville décor dresses the New Orleans-styled venue, whose owners were inspired by the beautiful, lived in district of LA. Known widely as Sydney's house of jazz and blues, its friendly and unpretentious ambience has been on the radar of the Newtown set for a while.
Since new management breathed life into the venerable King Street venue, tone of the big draws have been the regular burlesque seasons. Inventive, unusual and often hilarious (their Star Wars Burlesque seasons have consistently sold out months in advance), it’s Sydney’s premier place for sexiness with a smile.
Now something a little different
DR SKETCHY'S held at The Arthouse Hotel/Attic Bar in Pitt Street Sydney
Held every second Tuesday, Dr Sketchy’s is a drawing class with a twist: instead of nudes, all models are costumed burlesque artists. There’s no teacher but there is an MC and a show at half time.
Dr Sketchy's Anti Art School is about teasing and entertaining
The Arthouse is home to the original Sydney burlesque drawing classes. This is a life-drawing class – the models are burlesque beauties (with a couple of performances thrown in) and the drinks are free-flowing, so you can either come for the art or just for the shows and the ambience.
