I’m impressed there are still a handful of people who read books. With the way everyone’s so involved with texting, online games, tiktoking and cable tv series, I can actually sense more and more people becoming brain dead and losing their cognitive and social skills.

I disagree I know a lot of people that read books and Ive noticed more specialist bookshops in my travels than we had 20 years ago.

I know lots of people who don't anymore. Take a train, go to any bookstore here in Perth and they'll tell you business has been dwindling for the better part of 20 years. The only good times are when Covid hit and Christmas. If you've any books, try donating them to an opp shop, 2nd hand bookstore and 99% of them will reject you saying they've more than enough. And they all say the same thing, no one reads anymore.
Ditto antique stores. Albany Highway in Vic Park used to be full of them, no one appreciates the craft that goes into antiques anymore. So many closing. Furniture shops? Many have closed, everyone thinks Ikea. Only the big guys are surviving but only just.
Take a train, take a bus, everyone's got their heads down watching entertainment or playing games or texting away.
I LOVE reading.. I go through 2 or 3 books a week 
I get my books from op shops they are usually around $1! But your right Doob there is soooo many books at every op shop, when I finish reading mine now I donate to the local street libraries or cafes that have a book swap. I'm tempted to start one at my incall apartment block.

I think it's good to read books of a wide variety of topics provided they're not waaaaay beyond one's interests e.g. nuclear physics. I like books that explain complex things to simpletons like myself e.g. why is the sky blue all in one page.

Here's a challenge, I did it recently. Grab a paper, go to the Post Office and buy an aerogramme and handwrite to someone, your parents, your ex-schoolteacher and tell them how you're going and what they mean to you. It'll be a good exercise and NOTHING beats something handwritten or handmade. It may take 20 minutes or 20 days saying something like I get up most mornings have coffee and then realizing that I haven't left the apartment in years to have a great barista-made coffee.
I have started writing letters to my grandchildren as we receive so few letters nowadays

I read abit of everything, I am currently into thriller novels by James Patterson however I also enjoy true crime, auto biographies, true stories written by people about their experiences in history and all sorts. I was reading one about the Vietnam war the other week I like to build my knowledge & understanding on history and what happened from the people on the front line.
I like to have a physical book though I don't enjoy E-books or kindles or audiobooks. My brother was teasing me because when I went on a 10 day cruise I took 5 books an he said I should use a kindle but it's just not the same

I agree. Kindle's not the same. I'm in the process of decluttering my house at the moment and I've a large library of books. I'm so glad to say I finally found a secondary school that has a woodwork/metalwork/electrical faculty and the teacher was glad to receive by books. He said it'd put in the library for his students and give them as prizes at the end of the year. I was reaching the end of my tether and one person even suggested donating them to homeless people to use as tinder for bonfires! Paper beats kindle anytime!

You should try Alex Berensons, John Wells series. Also look out for Robert G Barrett, he’s an Australian author famous for his Les Norton series, you’ll definitely find some in Op Shops/second hand book shops. It was such a tragedy on both sides and even though I was only young I can remember the coverage in the newspapers and on TV as being very intense and polarising at the time.
If you haven't already read it I can recommend the book "Rolling Thunder in a Gentle Land".
It gives a good insight into the history surrounding it and also the terrible impact on the soldiers who fought it and the Vietnamese people who endured it on both sides.
There are many photos included as well.
You can pick up a second hand copy in hard cover version on the Web for a reasonable price.
