...bugger all as I don't actually celebrate on Jan 26 but, rather, on Jan 1 being the anniversary of federation on 1 Jan 1901 when all states came together to form the Commonwealth of Australia. Prior to that, the states were independent jurisdictions.

Fudd :)

Sink some VB tinnies, put on a wife beater and my best pair of double pluggers and start punch ons at the skyshow like all good Aussies do :D

I know its tongue in cheek WR3XR but your comment about boozing and fighting
But when in Germany That was the impression many over there had of us Especially at Octoberfest

Yes, I have a couple of appointments for Thursday, so I will be working. Traditionally I enjoy listening to the Tripple J Hottest 100 count down with friends.

Latter in the evening I will be driving to Albany to spend a few days in the cool away from the heat.

Like your style Ms Silk ......Aust Day is aways trad The J's hottest 100. Though this year its a one horse race....GOYTE!!!

Not far from the truth really! When were you there? Only the germans think it's a good idea to mix "show" rides with excessive alcohol consumption :p

not really fussed, since the really important holiday is in april...

I am with you Fudd. Australia Day is Jan 1. There was no 'Australia' prior to that (other than the name of a large island).

When doing research a few years ago, the Sydney Morning Herald in the 1890s referred to Jan 26 as "a day some people want to celebrate, but we cannot see for what reason".

Prior to 1988 Australia Day was not a big deal. (200th anniversary of convict arrival)

We still celebrate Jan 26 Because in would be (And I will use a term I hate here)
Unaustralian to scrap a public holiday

There will probably be a similar type of story For the next day that requires the proud showing of our flag. More than likely ANZAC Day

:occasion14 Hi Gentlemen,
Big celebrations for the day :)
We will be open from 10am with some hot ladies in our cool airconditioning come on in and say hi and stay awhile look forward to seeing you xxxxx Andrea

Most public holidays, are our peak work days :)
so I'm tossing up, whether to work....its forecast to be sooo hot !! :(
also, I can see the fireworks from my location,
so I can still catch them :)

Last year, I was driving back from an outcall, near Swanbourne - great city view along the rain tracks...
nearly parked my car to watch but I ended up watching them, from a nice location near home

People do not show the same bogan behaviour on ANZAC Day.

It wasn't the bogan side of things Demon It was the article about the Aussie flag and racism
I would not be surprised if another "Academic" Trots out a similar article about the flag on ANZAC day

Which feels more like Australia Day to me than Jan26

I can't remember seeing many (if any) cars flying flags and flag capes etc on ANZAC day.

Australia Day is meaningless which is why anything goes. ANZAC Day is meaningful so bogan behaviour is frowned upon.

I know big brother was in New Zealand for ANZAC a few years back Reckoned it was tops
One of the few times he has been there and not been ribbed about being a Aussie
Great to have something that binds two countries apart from the English heritage

Yes H2, shows that the ties that binds us with them are why we can make fun of each other.

The supposed 'hate' is not real, but the ribbing of great mates.

I agree and not only that, it's my birthday on january 1st :)

....well, a belated happy birthday to you RHG.... :occasion15 :occasion14 :occasion13

...in 1988 I took 6 weeks annual leave and did a tour of Aust....everywhere, you could see banners, billboards etc celebrating Australia's 200th.......except in NSW. There they were celebrating NSW's 200th.....suffice to say that it put me off accepting Aust Day on Jan 26.

Only NSW was telling the truth.

It's ironic that this comment about Aussies should come from the Germans, a country that started two world wars by invading other countries.

PS: When in Germany, don't mention the War!

Poor ol NSW I do feel sorry for them Like the old heavy weight champ who had it all now he's only recognised by the IBO
They ruled the roost From New Zealand to Albany and allparts inbetween no just a state with a nice wharf and the old ohpry

But at least they were sober when they invaded

War is always to be taken in context.

Us referring to WWI now is the equivalent to people in early 1900s referring to Napoleon and what he did to Europe 100 years earlier.

Napoleon was Hitler's model. The only difference between the 2 was their nationality and the Jewish massacre. Napoleon killed as many people, and left his country in ruins.

Using a longer timeframe, France and Germany were equally at fault for the European wars of the past few hundred years. (approximately)

all i'm going to do on australia day is cruise over to my parents place and spend the day with family....and scam the use of their pool!! ;D;D;D;D

Gentleman - what do you do ? :)

I could be taken as shallow in saying this :p please forgive me in advance :)

But!
The best thing I find about Australia Day, despite the variance in what day it shoulda coulda woulda be celebrated
Is
That on the 26th, we do unite as a nation :) (with the usual conflictations anyone has in a multicultural society) we do still come together and say I'm an aussie and I'm proud of it with all that I am :)
I like this element :)
Equally, I honour all the other important elements in our history.
And Anzac Day, rates high on my radar :D

To me, so long as we find peace as a multicultural society.
That's what's matters !
I enjoy stopping to listen to the variance of music, arts and everything in Australia that makes our nation what is - a joy!
I do like the opportunity to say thank you for Oz being what it is today and compared to many nations, that's a lot!

;D we have a lot of freedoms in australia.

Xx

I agree and not only that, it's my birthday on january 1st :)

Happy belated Birthday :)
