Fascinating Fact: Condoms were originally made of animal intestines or linen

In Asia before the fifteenth century, some use of glans condoms (devices covering only the head of the penis) is recorded. In China, glans condoms may have been made of oiled silk paper, or of lamb intestines. In Japan, they were made of tortoise shell or animal horn (ouch). In the 16th century, condoms were often made with linen sheaths soaked in a chemical solution and allowed to dry before use. The cloths were sized to cover the glans of the penis, and were held on with a ribbon. Pictured above is an animal intestine condom from the early 1900s.

Roman soldiers used them.

I've heard that the peoples of North Africa also used goat intestines.

The idea was then improved on somewhat by the British on their arrival - they found it more comfortable to remove the intestine from the goats before using them - LOL

I'm curious what their motivation for using them was back in those days. STD's weren't as prevalent and i doubt they cared about getting someone pregnant. Majority would have only had sex within marriage anyway, no?

They did worry about STDs, particularly syphilis. It would hurt an army.

Syphilis was a major killer back then. Not having an army affected by syphilis was major advantage in war.

Rome had the first professional army, so they were interested in a long campaign (several years), not just a battle.

Castration was typically carried out on the soon-to-be eunuch without his consent in order that he might perform a specific social function; this was common in many societies. The earliest records for intentional castration to produce eunuchs are from the Sumerian city of Lagash in the 21st century BC.[1][2] Over the millennia since, they have performed a wide variety of functions in many different cultures: courtiers or equivalent domestics, treble singers, religious specialists, government officials, military commanders, and guardians of women or harem servants.
