1.Use mothballs. Put a cup of mothballs in the middle of a small square of cheesecloth (about 5"x5"/12.7 x 12.7 cm). Tie it to create a sack. Tie the sack to the area where the bats are nesting (while they're gone). The odour will discourage them from nesting there. You might have to do it more than once, however, since bats tend to return to old nesting sites.
2.Use aerosol dog or cat repellent. Spray it on the spot where bats hang out, but do it during the day when the bats aren't around.
3.Hang Mylar balloon or strips of tin foil in the roosting areas and allow them to move in the breeze.

Woman may be prosecuted for scaring away bats
http://www.brisbanetimes.com.au/que...ted-for-scaring-away-bats-20110805-1ien7.html
A Gold Coast woman whose home was raided after she used an air horn to scare away bats may face prosecution. Officers from the Department of Environment and Resource Management armed with a search warrant raided the Southport home of Robyn Burgess on Thursday, seizing the air horn. She said they told her they were considering prosecuting her for interfering with the protected animals but a final decision is yet to be made. Ms Burgess said it was the first contact the department had made with her and she didn’t realise she was breaking the law. If she’s prosecuted and convicted she could be fined up to $100,000 or even jailed. She said she and other residents living beside Gardiners Creek had been tormented by the bat colony for years and were fed up. The noise and stench had been so bad she’s even had to remodel part of her home.Ms Burgess said she was shocked when DERM officers knocked on her door with a search warrant. She said she handed over the air horn and when she asked what offence she’d committed the officers told her she was not authorised to disperse bats. ‘‘I didn’t think I was taking the law into my own hands. I was protecting my property,’’ Ms Burgess said on Friday, adding property values had fallen since the bats moved in. Interference with bats is being taken very seriously amid the current Hendra crisis in Queensland and NSW - 15 horses have died or been put down since June 20 this year. Scientists have warned that stressing bats by trying to cull them or move them on could cause them to shed more of the potentially deadly virus. Humans can become infected from sick horses who contract Hendra from bat urine, blood and birthing products. Ms Burgess said Southport residents were very concerned about disease. ‘‘None of us know how many of the bats carry the Hendra virus and none of us know how many of them have the lissa virus or what effect it might have,’’ she said. ‘‘I think it’s time for education and information.’’
Neighbour Heather Govan said she was ‘‘extremely perturbed’’ about the raid on the Burgess home. ‘‘[The bats] wake us up at 4am every morning. It’s terrible, they scream so loudly ...’’ She said she owned a dog and the recent detection of Hendra antibodies in a dog on a Hendra-infected property in southeast Queensland was a big worry. Authorities believe the dog was infected by Hendra-infected horses and not directly by bats. ‘‘I think the bats need to be culled to try to get rid of the diseases. If they’re passing it on to humans then there’s more humans dying, so just get rid of the bats,’’ Ms Govan said. ‘‘This is a really nice area but the bats have just taken over.’’ Ms Burgess said she’d been advised she could apply for permission to disperse the bats, and that’s what she intended to do along with affected neighbours. Premier Anna Bligh said she understood residents’ frustrations but warned them not to take matters into their own hands. She also urged the Gold Coast City Council to apply for a bat relocation permit. ‘‘We can assess whether this is a colony that can be successfully moved. ''In the meantime, I really have to discourage people taking the law into their own hands,’’ she said.

Wow!!! That's just bat-shit crazy to treat her like that. I'm a big greenie/animal rights person thingie but people shouldn't have to put up with that.

GUANO...BAT SHIT
Guano (via Spanish, ultimately from the Quechua wanu) is the excrement of seabirds, cave-dwelling bats, pinnipeds, or (in English usage) birds in general. As a manure,guano is a highly effective fertilizer due to its exceptionally high content of nitrogen, phosphate and potassium: nutrients essential for plant growth.

Now here is a business opportunity!

I don't think so....
Bald as a bat....no that's bald as a badger.
Either way dunno if guano will help!
Thats a shame my nose and ear hairs are getting a little sparse
As for bat prevention I think you will have to go the boring route and bring the washing in at a early hour

Hi There; Mary-Anne and all fellow members

I'm Sasha;
I'm lucky enough to be one of the beautiful young ladies who is new to the Canberra establishment;
and am very excited to be able to make my first official post on talkinsex.com
I read your post regarding the bats and i also lived in Southport for years.
(Southport is the location on the gold coast in qld where the news story above was referring to)
The bats were/are always a problem and after many times of trying a few different things we found that we were able to save our cars;clothes;and freshly painted house by removing any trees that they liked in particular such as those big palms that drop those little yellow fruits. We also had a peach and mango tree in the backyard and the bats love any fruit really so we removed them also.

It was a shame because we enjoyed our garden etc. though we just planted new ones that were not fruit bearing etc. One other thing we found was that if we removed any area where they like to hang (literally) or deter them by placing objects on them (e.g.; copious amounts of pegs amongst the make shift washing lines so they have no where to sit or hang etc.) another thing that also helped was a small hyperactive hunting dog for example a chihuahua or a jack Russell or mini foxy would be perfect; they seem to have a great affect on deterring the bats from hanging around. if they fly over at a certain time of day that’s partially unavoidable i can understand so i suggest perhaps during that time frame do not hang the washing and do assure you rinse or wash the poop off the cars or house as soon as realistically possible as the acidity is so high that it actually eats the paint sometimes in as quickly as 2 days ... car covers can help and placing the washing under cover or a tarpaulin or pop up carport or pergola perhaps.

I hope this aids and helps in some way.... Its not much though it was relevant and the only things I could think of that actually worked... before that my sister and i use to cry and throw things at them in the trees because they would wake us up at night with the most awful sounds and would send us mad.. lol
Take Care and good luck with the bat battle... warmest regards
Sasha Webber

I believe another downside of bat guano is that, like seabird poo, it is highly acidic and can etch car paint if it is left on too long. Iridescent paint, ie the sparkly stuff, is particularly vulnerable because of the aluminium particles embedded in it.

Atleast your neighbors and not stealing your laundry like they do in some areas of Perth and Melbourne......

Clothes that are dried inside last longer as sunlight ruins them....

How about getting your "KEVIN" handyman in Darwin to make a tarp cover over your washing lines?
